How to Make a Fresh Flower Crown
- Trim the flowers. Cut each stem to about 1 1/2 inches long. Keeping the stems a consistent length makes them easier to attach to the wire.
- Shape the wire base. Measure around the wearer’s head, then cut a piece of floral wire twice that length. Form the wire into a loop that matches the head measurement. Wrap the extra wire around the loop to reinforce the base. Check the fit before adding flowers.
- Attach the center flower. Place a flower at the front center of the wire loop. Wrap floral tape around its stem and the wire until the flower feels secure.
- Build one side. Position the next flower behind the center flower, then tape its stem to the wire. Continue adding flowers in the same direction until you reach the end of that side. Overlap the flowers slightly for a connected look.
- Complete the other side. Start beside the center flower and work toward the opposite end of the wire. Face the flower heads toward one another at the center, then continue attaching each stem with floral tape.
- Finish the back. Cover any exposed wire with floral tape. Check that the stems are secure and that no sharp wire ends are left uncovered.
Storing and Adjusting the Crown
If you make the crowns the night before, store them in the refrigerator in plastic freezer bags overnight. Keep the crown supported so the flowers are less likely to be pressed out of shape.
To adjust the fit, place the crown on the wearer’s head and gently press the wire together at the back. You can also twist the wire slightly to make the loop smaller. Adjust it gradually so the crown feels secure without squeezing.
