How to Use Drawer Knobs as Wall Hooks

Drawer knob wall hooks make use of vertical space without the need for a mounting board. This simple project turns decorative drawer knobs into practical hooks for coats, scarves, and bags. The key is matching the hanger bolts and drywall anchors to your knobs and wall so the finished hooks are secure for everyday items.

Before you begin, check the knob’s existing screw size and the anchor packaging. These details determine whether the parts fit together and which drill bit to use.

Tools and materials for drawer knob wall hooks

Gather the following tools and supplies:

  • Tools: power drill, hammer, and pliers or locking vice grips.
  • Materials: drawer knobs; #10 2-inch hanger bolts; and 12-14-16 ribbed plastic anchors.
  • Primer and paint, if needed, plus masking tape for testing the layout.

The #10 2-inch hanger bolts worked with the knobs used for this project, but sizes can vary. Compare a hanger bolt’s diameter with the screw supplied with each knob before purchasing. The anchor shown in the original project materials was not the right size; use anchors that fit the hanger bolts and follow the manufacturer’s drill-bit guidance.

How to make drawer knob wall hooks

1. Fit the hanger bolts to the knobs

Use pliers or locking vice grips to turn a hanger bolt into the hole in each knob. Choose a size that fits tightly. If the bolt is too loose, look for a larger diameter at a hardware store. For wooden knobs, you can carefully widen the hole with a drill to accommodate a larger bolt, provided the drywall anchors also fit that bolt.

Grip only the unthreaded section of the hanger bolt with pliers to avoid damaging the threads. If there is no unthreaded section, thread two nuts onto the bolt, tighten them against each other, and grip the nuts while turning it.

2. Finish the knobs and plan the layout

If the knobs are unfinished, stain them or apply primer and paint. Let the finish dry according to its product instructions before installation. Arrange the knobs on the wall, then use masking tape to preview their spacing and appearance before drilling.

3. Drill and install the anchors

Drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the drywall anchor. The anchors used in this project recommended a 5/16-inch drill bit; check the instructions for the anchors you have, since requirements can differ. Tap each anchor into place with a hammer. If an anchor crushes instead of entering the hole, the hole may be too small. Enlarge it slightly and try again.

4. Attach the knobs

Screw each knob into its wall anchor until it is firmly seated. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the anchor or wall. These hooks are intended for everyday items, not heavy loads such as 50-pound weights. For heavier items, use hardware suitable for the load and wall type.

Style and use your finished hooks

Knobs with a broad front can provide room for thicker items, including jackets, several scarves, or purse straps. Arrange the hooks where they are easy to reach, and leave enough space between them for the items you plan to hang.

For a different look, try knobs in multiple colors or decorative antique styles. The finish and arrangement can be tailored to your room while keeping the installation straightforward. Drawer knob wall hooks are a compact storage option when floor and shelf space are limited. —Mandi
