Lengthen Your Curtains Without Sewing

Tall windows can make standard curtains look too short, but replacing every panel can be expensive. If you want to lengthen curtains without sewing, adding decorative trim with iron-on hem tape is a practical way to gain extra length and refresh your existing curtains.

In this project, 84-inch curtains needed to be extended to suit rooms with taller windows—some requiring panels over 100 inches long. The method uses a seam ripper, an iron, and trim, so you can customize the added length without a sewing machine.

How to lengthen curtains without sewing

The original panels fell short of the floor. Before choosing trim, hang each curtain and measure the gap between its bottom edge and your preferred finished length. Measuring while the panel is hanging helps account for how it falls on your window.

Supplies:

  • Curtains
  • Decorative trim, such as lace
  • Iron-on hem tape or fusible bonding web
  • Seam ripper
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Damp cloth

Step 1: Remove the existing hem. Use a seam ripper to carefully open the bottom hem of the curtain. Work slowly, especially if the fabric snags easily. Avoid pulling the threads forcefully, as that can damage the curtain.

Step 2: Press the fabric flat. Place the panel on an ironing board and use steam to press open the fold left by the former hem. Check the curtain’s care label before applying heat, and test an inconspicuous area if you are unsure how the fabric will respond.

Step 3: Measure and attach the first trim row. Rehang the curtain to confirm how much additional length it needs to reach the floor. Cut the trim to match the measurement. Lay the iron-on adhesive along the curtain’s raw bottom edge, place the trim over it, and cover the area with a damp cloth.

Press with the steam setting for 5–10 seconds at a time, following the adhesive instructions. Lift and press the iron rather than sliding it, which can shift the trim. Continue across the width of the panel.

Step 4: Add more trim if desired. Repeat the same process for additional rows. Layering three tiers of lace creates a more decorative edge, while a single row offers a simpler finish. Let the adhesive cool before handling or rehanging the curtain.

The trim edges can be left raw for a casual look. For a neater finish, wrap the ends around the curtain edge and secure them using the same pressing method. Check that the trim is aligned before applying heat, since repositioning it after bonding may be difficult.

The extended curtains now reach the floor, giving the room a more finished appearance. Compare the panels from a distance after rehanging them to check that the added trim hangs evenly.

This no-sew approach works well when you want to reuse existing curtains and add length with a decorative detail. For windows that need a much larger extension, joining panels may be another option, but the trim method can be a straightforward solution for a modest increase.

Final tips for lengthening curtains

To lengthen curtains without sewing, measure the hanging panel first, choose trim that suits the fabric, and test the iron’s heat before working across the full width. Following the adhesive’s instructions and pressing in short, even sections can help create a secure, consistent finish.
