Library Card Bookmark (Free Printables)

A library card bookmark is a fun way to keep track of the books you read throughout the year. Designed to resemble a classic catalog card, this printable can be personalized with book titles and makes a thoughtful handmade addition to a book or bookstore gift card.

The printable includes two pages: one with black-and-white designs and another with colorful options. Print the style that suits the reader, or mix and match designs for a small set of bookmarks. It can be a simple project for birthdays, Father’s Day, holidays, or any occasion when you’re giving a book.

What’s included in the library card bookmark printable

One page features black-and-white bookmarks for a classic, ink-saving look. The second page offers colorful designs, so you can choose a style that fits the recipient or the book you’re giving.

For best results, check your printer’s paper settings before printing. If the design is intended to be written on, choose a paper surface that works with your pen or marker and allow any fresh ink to dry before handling.

Supplies for making your bookmark

Sturdy paper helps a bookmark hold its shape during regular use. A slightly glossy paper can work, too; test your preferred pen on a spare piece first to make sure it writes clearly.

  • A home printer
  • Sturdy printer paper
  • Bookmark covers, optional; the inside capacity should be 2 3/8″ x 8″
  • Yarn
  • Fabric scissors

How to make a library card bookmark

1. Print and cut out the bookmarks

Print the designs and carefully cut around each bookmark. If you have bookmark covers, place the cutouts inside them. Otherwise, punch or cut a small hole near the top for a tassel. Keep the hole far enough from the edge to help prevent tearing.

2. Make a yarn tassel

Wrap yarn around a small book or photo album several times. Loosely tie the yarn at the center, leaving a long tail to attach the tassel. Slide the loops off the book, cut through the loops at both ends, then tie another piece of yarn around the tassel near the top to hold its shape.

You can also finish the bookmark with pom-poms, a braided yarn strand, or loose yarn instead. Choose an embellishment that fits through the hole without pulling on the paper.

3. Attach the tassel

Tie the tassel’s center tail through the hole in the bookmark or its cover, then trim any uneven yarn ends. If you are using a cover, make sure the knot does not interfere with opening or closing it.

Personalize and give your bookmark

Add book titles as you read, or leave the bookmark blank for the recipient to fill in. The library card design makes a practical keepsake for readers and an easy handmade detail to pair with a book gift. With a few basic supplies, this library card bookmark is ready to use or give. — Emma
