No-Sew Fleece Blanket

A no-sew fleece blanket is a simple, cozy project that turns two pieces of fleece into a useful throw or thoughtful handmade gift. Instead of stitching the edges, you cut strips around the fabric and knot the layers together. This four-step method uses basic tools and lets you choose colors or patterns to suit the person who will use the blanket.

Plan for about two hours to make one blanket. The project costs approximately $15–$20, depending on the fabric you choose, and yields one blanket.

What Is a No-Sew Fleece Tie Blanket?

A no-sew fleece blanket has two layers of fleece joined with knots along the edges. Matching strips are cut through both layers, then tied together using a balloon-style knot. The knots create a finished edge without a sewing machine, making this a practical project for beginners.

Choose two coordinating fabrics and lay them together before cutting. Checking the colors and patterns at this stage makes it easier to see how the finished blanket will look.

How Much Fabric Do You Need for a No-Sew Fleece Blanket?

Use 1.5 to 2 yards of fleece for each layer, with the same amount for both colors or patterns. The smaller amount is suitable for a child’s blanket; 2 yards per layer gives you more fabric for a blanket intended for an adult or to be shared. The finished dimensions depend on the fabric’s original width and how much you trim.

Supplies and Fabric Choices

  • 1.5 to 2 yards of fleece in each of two colors or patterns
  • Fabric scissors
  • Rotary cutter, fabric ruler, and cutting mat (optional, but helpful)
  • Paper or thin cardboard for a cutting template (optional)

Polar fleece is a common choice. If you want to reduce the chance of small fabric pills developing after washing, look for anti-pill fleece. Thin or medium-weight fabric is usually easier to tie than very thick fleece, and using a similar type of fleece for both layers can help them wear evenly. Blizzard fleece is another option and is often less expensive. If using it, place the nubbier right sides facing outward.

A quick video tutorial may also help you follow the process; the written steps below provide the measurements for each cut.

How to Make a No-Sew Fleece Blanket

1. Trim and align the fabric

Lay both fleece pieces on a flat surface and stack them neatly, lining up their edges as closely as possible. Use a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat, or fabric scissors, to remove curled ends and uneven edges. Aim for a rectangular shape; small differences in width are not usually noticeable once the blanket is finished.

For blizzard fleece, make sure the nubby sides face outward before cutting and tying.

2. Cut squares from the corners

Cut a 5-inch by 5-inch square from each corner, going through both layers of fabric. Removing these squares clears extra material so the edge strips can be tied neatly around the entire blanket.

3. Cut the edge strips

Along every side, cut strips that are 1 inch wide and 5 inches long through both layers. A rotary cutter and ruler can make repeated cuts easier, while fabric scissors work well too. Measure the first few strips carefully to establish a consistent width.

Helpful tip: Make a simple guide from paper or thin cardboard, such as a cereal box. Cut 1-inch-wide, 5-inch-long slots along one edge, then place the guide on the fleece and cut along those openings. Move it along the edge as you work to keep the strips even.

4. Tie the strips

Starting at one edge, tie each pair of matching strips with a balloon-style knot, as if closing a balloon. Continue around the blanket until every strip is secured. Check that the knots are snug but not so tight that they pull the fabric out of shape.

Some sides may feel easier to tie than others because fleece stretches more in one direction. The 5-inch strips should be long enough to knot; work patiently on the less-stretchy sides and avoid pulling unevenly.

Washing and Care

Wash the finished blanket in cold water on a gentle cycle and use a modest amount of detergent. This helps care for the fleece fibers and reduces the chance of detergent residue affecting the fabric’s feel. Follow any care instructions printed on the fabric label.

Prewashing fleece is generally not necessary because it is typically dimensionally stable. If you are unsure about a particular fabric, check its label before cutting.

Make a Cozy No-Sew Fleece Blanket

With two layers of fabric, four trimmed corners, and tied edge strips, you can make a no-sew fleece blanket without sewing. Choose coordinated fleece, keep the 5-inch ties consistent, and take care to knot each pair securely. The finished blanket can be made in colors or patterns suited to its recipient and used as a cozy gift or everyday throw.
