Make Your Own Custom Color Nail Polish

Finding a particular pink or a sheer polish with just the right shimmer can be difficult. Making custom color nail polish at home lets you blend cosmetic colorants into a ready-to-use polish base and adjust the shade to suit your style. With a few basic supplies and careful mixing, you can create a sheer, glittery, or more opaque finish.

Choose a polish base and suitable colorants

A suspending nail polish base is designed to help keep added colorants distributed through the polish. A clear nail polish can also be used, including a 5-free or 8-free formula if that is your preference. A 16-free topcoat is another clear-polish option. Regular clear polish may not suspend colorants as effectively as a dedicated suspending base, so it may need more shaking before each use.

Use only colorants made for cosmetic use and suitable for oil-based or oil-dispersible products. Mineral micas add shimmer and are available in many colors. For bright, glossy shades, consider oil-dispersible colorants such as ultramarines and oxides. A small pinch of cornstarch can create a more matte effect.

Avoid craft glitter, food coloring, and other non-cosmetic materials. They are not formulated for use in nail polish and may not mix or perform as intended. Check the colorant and polish labels before combining them.

Supplies for custom color nail polish

  • Suspending nail polish base or clear nail polish
  • Empty nail polish bottles with caps
  • Nail polish mixing balls
  • Small funnels
  • Cosmetic micas, oil-based colorants, and/or cosmetic glitter
  • Popsicle sticks or miniature scoops

Work on a protected surface and keep the bottles and tools clean and dry. A small funnel helps direct loose powders into the bottle and reduces spills.

How to make your own nail polish shade

  1. Prepare the bottle. Place the mixing balls inside an empty nail polish bottle, then set a miniature funnel in the bottle opening.
  2. Add the colorant. Use a clean stick or scoop to transfer the colorant through the funnel. Combine different cosmetic colorants if you want to create a blended shade.
  3. Adjust the amount. A large pinch can give a sheer result. For a heavier, more opaque color, add up to 1/4–1/2 teaspoon. Start with less; you can add more if the bottle has room and the mixture remains easy to blend.
  4. Tap in the powder. Gently tap the funnel and bottle so the colorant falls inside. Move slowly to keep powder and glitter from spilling.
  5. Fill and close. Remove the funnel, carefully fill the bottle with polish base, and screw on the cap. Avoid overfilling so there is room to mix.
  6. Shake thoroughly. Shake for 30–60 seconds, or until the colorants are evenly blended into the base. If you use a regular clear polish, shake it longer before application when the color has settled.

Apply and care for your finished polish

Apply the custom polish over a suitable base coat and finish with a top coat. These layers can help the manicure wear better and bring out the finish. Follow the polish instructions, keep the bottle closed when not in use, and store it as directed on its label.

Creating custom color nail polish is a straightforward way to experiment with color and shimmer. Begin with a small amount of cosmetic colorant, mix thoroughly, and adjust the blend gradually until you reach the opacity and finish you want.
