Shower Steamers Recipe

A shower steamers recipe is an easy way to add a fresh, aromatic touch to your shower routine. These small melts combine peppermint, eucalyptus, and orange essential oils for a crisp scent. They are designed to dissolve gradually in shower humidity and are not intended to be used as bath bombs or applied to skin.

With baking soda, corn starch, witch hazel, and a silicone mold, this recipe makes eight small shower melts. A little food coloring is optional and can add a mint-inspired look.

Shower Steamers Recipe: Ingredients and Supplies

Gather the ingredients before you begin. Measuring the oils in advance makes it easier to add them evenly to the mixture.

  • ½ cup corn starch
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 5 tablespoons witch hazel
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 6 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops orange essential oil
  • 1 drop food coloring (optional)
  • Silicone mold, such as a star mold

How to Make Shower Steamers

1. Mix the dry ingredients

Add the baking soda and corn starch to a bowl and stir until they are evenly combined. Breaking up any lumps at this stage helps create a smoother mixture.

2. Add witch hazel and essential oils

Slowly pour in 5 tablespoons of witch hazel, stirring as you go to prevent lumps. Mix in the food coloring, if using. A small amount of green coloring gives the melts a minty appearance. If the mixture seems too dry to stir, add just a little more witch hazel at a time.

Stir in 5 drops of orange, 10 drops of peppermint, and 6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil until the scent is distributed throughout the mixture.

3. Fill the mold

Spoon the mixture into the silicone mold and gently press it into each cavity so the shapes hold together. This batch makes 8 small stars. Keep the mold on a flat surface for easier handling.

4. Chill and store

Place the filled mold in the freezer overnight to harden. Once firm, keep the shower melts in a cool place, such as the refrigerator, to help prevent them from softening. Store them in a covered container and keep them dry until use.

How to Use Shower Melts

Set one melt in the shower away from the direct stream of water, such as on a corner ledge or soap holder. This allows it to dissolve gradually rather than washing away quickly. Avoid placing it where it could obstruct a drain or create a slippery surface.

For a stronger aroma, the original instructions suggest adding 1–2 extra drops of essential oil to a melt once it is in the shower. Use care when handling essential oils: they can irritate skin, so avoid direct contact and keep the melts out of reach of children and pets. Stop using them if the fragrance causes discomfort, and ensure the bathroom is adequately ventilated.

These homemade melts can also be packaged in a clean jar or bowl as a small gift. Label the container with the ingredients and storage directions, and remind recipients to keep the melts chilled and use them only in the shower.
