Song Lyric Art

Song lyric art is a simple way to give a painting a personal touch and create meaningful wall decor. With a piece of artwork, adhesive letter stickers, paint, and a few basic tools, you can turn an old print or a duplicate painting into a custom design. Choose an image you are comfortable painting over, since most of its original details will be covered.

How to Make Song Lyric Art

This project uses paint to create a solid background while the stickers protect the letters underneath. Once the paint is dry, removing the stickers reveals the original artwork in the shape of your chosen words.

Materials

  • A paint-by-number, vintage painting, or print you do not mind altering
  • Adhesive letter stickers
  • White paint; spray paint may help reduce paint seeping beneath sticker edges
  • A paintbrush if using brush-on paint
  • Scissors

A damaged artwork, an inexpensive print, or a duplicate piece can be a good starting point. Before applying stickers, check that the surface is clean and dry. If you are using spray paint, work in a well-ventilated area and follow the product label.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose the artwork. Select a piece whose size and surface suit the words you want to display. Avoid using a painting you would not want to change.
  2. Plan the lettering. Cut out individual letters if needed, then arrange them on the artwork before sticking them down. This makes it easier to adjust spacing and line placement.
  3. Apply the stickers. Press each letter firmly onto the surface. The layout can be carefully aligned or intentionally casual, depending on the look you prefer.
  4. Paint the surface. Cover the artwork with one or two coats of white paint. Apply the paint evenly, taking care around the sticker edges. Spray paint is another option and may help limit bleeding beneath the letters.
  5. Let the paint dry. Follow the drying directions for the paint you use. Do not rush this step: peeling stickers while the paint is wet can smudge the finish.
  6. Remove the letters. Carefully lift and peel away each sticker to reveal the artwork beneath. Work slowly, especially around small or narrow letter shapes.

If paint has crept under an edge, a small amount of bleeding can be part of the handmade look. For cleaner lettering, press the stickers down firmly and apply thin, even coats rather than brushing heavily over their edges.

Displaying Your Song Lyric Art

Choose a spot where the words and remaining artwork are easy to see, such as a bedroom or living area. In the original display, the lyrics were by Camera Obscura, and the piece was placed beside artwork by Ashley Goldberg. The song had personal significance because it was used during the wedding ceremony. This illustrates how a lyric connected to a meaningful moment can make a handmade piece feel especially personal.

Song lyric art can also work as a thoughtful gift or as part of a gallery wall. Before hanging it, make sure the paint is fully dry and use a hanging method suited to the artwork’s weight. The result is a one-of-a-kind decor piece made by giving an existing painting a new purpose.
