Easy Crop Top Restyle

A simple crop top restyle can give a shirt that rarely leaves the closet a new shape and a better fit. This sewing project shortens the hem and adds elastic, creating a gathered finish that pairs well with high-waisted skirts and shorts. It requires basic sewing supplies and can be adjusted to suit the length you prefer.

Supplies

  • A top to alter
  • Scissors or a rotary cutter
  • A measuring tape
  • Elastic; 3/8-inch elastic was used for this project
  • A sewing machine
  • Pins and an iron, for preparing the hem
  • A paper clip or safety pin to guide the elastic

Before cutting, check how the top fits and decide where you want its finished hem to sit. Try it on and mark the intended length, allowing extra fabric for the folded hem and elastic casing.

Step 1: Mark the length
Measure up from the existing bottom edge to determine how much length to remove. Include enough fabric for the hem; cutting exactly at the desired finished length will leave no material for the casing. Measure the front and back consistently, and double-check the mark before cutting.

Step 2: Fold and press the hem
Turn the top inside out. Fold the lower edge upward and press the fold with an iron. For this example, the first fold was 1 1/4 inches. Fold the edge over once more and press again to create a neat casing for the elastic. Follow the garment’s care instructions when choosing an iron temperature.

Step 3: Stitch the casing
Pin the folded hem so it stays even while sewing. Stitch along the upper edge of the fold, leaving a small opening unsewn. The opening needs to be large enough to pass the elastic through. Use a steady seam and keep the fabric flat to help prevent puckering.

Step 4: Add the elastic
Measure around your waist and cut the elastic to a comfortable length. It should feel secure without being uncomfortably tight. Attach a paper clip or safety pin to one end and guide it through the casing, keeping hold of the other end so it does not disappear inside the hem. Bring both ends together, check the fit, then pin and stitch them securely.

Step 5: Close the opening (optional)
Once the elastic is joined and the gathers are distributed evenly, sew the opening closed. If you may want to adjust or replace the elastic later, leave the opening accessible instead.

Turn the top right side out and check that the hem sits evenly. Adjust the gathers by gently moving the fabric along the elastic. The finished top can be styled with high-waisted skirts or shorts.

This crop top restyle is a practical way to refresh a garment with a small alteration. Take time to check the desired length and elastic fit before closing the casing; those two details make the finished top easier to wear. Happy sewing!
