Faux Gold Bookends

These faux gold bookends turn simple PVC pipe into a sculptural, functional accent for a bookshelf. The project uses two pipe diameters, machine screws, and gold spray paint to create a geometric look inspired by vintage metal desk accessories. Designed by Sarah Sherman Samuel, the bookends can be assembled with basic cutting and drilling tools.

Materials for Two Faux Gold Bookends

Gather the supplies before cutting so you can check the pipe lengths and have every fastener ready. The listed quantities are for a pair:

  • Two 2-foot lengths of 1.25-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • Two 2-foot lengths of 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • Mitre box and saw
  • 400-grit sandpaper
  • Electric drill
  • Gold spray paint
  • About 20 #4-40 machine screws, 3/4 inch long, with matching nuts

Work on a stable surface, and use eye protection when cutting or drilling. Follow the spray paint label, including its ventilation and drying instructions.

How to Make Faux Gold Bookends

1. Cut the PVC pipe

Use the mitre box and saw to cut the 1-inch pipe into three pieces measuring 1 inch, 4 inches, and 5.25 inches. Cut the 1.25-inch pipe into four pieces measuring 1.25 feet, 2.5 inches, 4.5 inches, and 6 inches. Measure each section carefully before cutting. A power reciprocating saw can be used if available, but secure the pipe and follow the tool’s safety instructions.

2. Sand and paint the pieces

Sand the cut edges and the outer surfaces with 400-grit sandpaper. This removes rough plastic left by the saw and prepares the smooth pipe surface for paint. Wipe away sanding dust, then apply gold spray paint to all the pieces according to the product directions. Let them dry fully before handling or assembly.

3. Drill and connect the sections

Drill a hole about 1/4 inch from the bottom of each pipe section wherever two pieces will connect. Plan the arrangement before drilling so the sections meet at the intended angles. Take care to keep the holes aligned where a screw will pass through both pipes.

Thread a machine screw from inside one pipe through its drilled hole and into the adjoining piece. Secure the joint with a matching nut on the inside of the second pipe. Repeat the drilling and fastening steps at each connection until all the sections are assembled. Avoid overtightening, which can damage the PVC.

Finishing and Display Tips

Once assembled, place the bookends on a level shelf and check that they stand steadily before adding books. Since the pipes are hollow, avoid overloading the arrangement; add books gradually and make sure the supports remain upright. Touch up any small paint scratches only in a well-ventilated area and let the finish dry completely.

The finished faux gold bookends offer a simple way to add a metallic accent to a desk or bookcase. Although the sculptural shape may resemble a candle holder, PVC is not suitable for use near an open flame or direct heat. Use the finished pieces as bookends and keep them away from candles and other heat sources.
