Geometric Copper Necklace DIY

A geometric copper necklace DIY project can turn short sections of copper tubing and leather cord into a bold, wearable accessory. This design uses five linked triangles that gradually grow in size and then shrink again, creating a balanced centerpiece. Measure and cut the tubing carefully before threading it, and check that your leather cord fits through the tube openings.

Materials for a Geometric Copper Necklace DIY

  • Two 2-foot lengths of 1/4-inch copper tubing
  • 6 feet of leather cord sized to fit inside the 1/4-inch tubing
  • Jump rings
  • 10 mm rectangular end caps
  • A toggle clasp and toggle ring
  • Pliers
  • A pipe cutter

Before cutting, lay out the materials and confirm the cord can pass through the tubing without catching. A snug fit helps the triangles hold their shape, while cord that is too thick may be difficult to thread.

Cut the Copper Tubing

Use a pipe cutter to prepare the following pieces:

  • Five pieces, each 1 inch long
  • Four pieces, each 1.5 inches long
  • Four pieces, each 2 inches long
  • Two pieces, each 2.5 inches long

Work on a stable surface and keep your fingers clear of the cutting wheel. After cutting, check the tube ends for rough edges before threading the cord.

Thread and Shape the Five Triangles

Tie a loop knot at one end of the leather cord. Thread one 1-inch copper piece onto the cord, followed by two 1.5-inch pieces. Bring the loose end back through the 1-inch piece in the same direction as before. Pull the cord until the three tubes form a triangle near the knot. Adjust the pieces so they sit securely without forcing the cord.

Make the next triangle with another 1-inch piece and two 2-inch pieces. Thread the cord back through the 1-inch section as before, then position the new triangle beside the first one.

Continue in the same way to form the center triangle using one 1-inch piece and two 2.5-inch pieces. For the fourth triangle, use two 2-inch pieces; for the fifth, use two 1.5-inch pieces. Each triangle uses one of the five short 1-inch sections. Arrange the triangles from smaller to larger, then back to smaller, and adjust them so their top corners touch neatly.

Finish the Necklace and Add the Clasp

When the five triangles are aligned, tie a second loop knot close to the final corner. Leave about 1/2 inch of cord beyond the knot, trim the excess, and tuck the tail into the nearby copper tube. This completes the decorative centerpiece.

Cut two 12-inch lengths of leather cord for the necklace straps. Loop one length through the knot at one end of the triangle piece, bring its loose ends together, and tie a knot. Repeat on the other side. Trim each pair of ends evenly, leaving about 1/2 inch past the knot.

Use pliers to secure the rectangular end caps over the cord ends. Attach the end caps to the toggle clasp and toggle ring with the jump rings. Close each connection securely and check that the clasp opens and fastens properly before wearing the necklace.

Simple Variation

For a more minimal look, make just one triangle and thread it onto a longer leather cord. Whichever version you choose, check the knots and connections occasionally, especially after adjusting the necklace. This geometric copper necklace DIY design is credited to Rachel.
