An old sweater can become a cozy pom-pom hat with a few basic supplies and straightforward sewing. This project is a practical way to reuse a sweater that no longer fits or has been sitting unworn, while keeping its original color or pattern. You do not need advanced sewing skills, but working slowly and choosing a hat shape that fits well will help you get a neat result.
Supplies for a Sweater Pom-Pom Hat

Gather the following materials before you begin:
- A knit sweater
- Fabric scissors
- Straight pins
- A standard sewing machine
- Yarn and cardboard for making the pom-pom
Choose a sweater with enough usable fabric for the hat shape. A clean, flat work surface makes it easier to position the pattern and keep the layers from shifting. If the sweater fabric is especially stretchy or delicate, handle it gently while pinning and sewing.
How to Make a Pom-Pom Hat from a Sweater
1. Trace a hat shape onto the sweater

Use a knit hat with a shape you like as your pattern. Turn the sweater inside out and lay it flat, smoothing out wrinkles without stretching the knit. Position the hat at the bottom of the sweater band, then use straight pins to mark around its outline. Keeping the band at the base gives the new hat a finished lower edge.
Check that the sweater layers are aligned and that the outline is symmetrical before sewing. A little care at this stage can help prevent uneven edges later.
2. Sew around the outline

With the sweater still inside out, sew along the pinned outline using a medium-to-small stitch. Guide the fabric slowly through the machine and follow the shape as closely as possible. Remove pins as you reach them rather than sewing over them, and avoid pulling or stretching the knit while stitching.
3. Cut out the hat

Use fabric scissors to cut around the sewn shape, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance beyond the stitching. Cutting carefully helps preserve the seam and gives the hat its intended outline. Turn the hat right side out after trimming and check that the seam is secure.
4. Make and attach the pom-pom
To make the topper, cut a cardboard donut that is 4 inches wide, with a 1-inch hole in the middle. Wrap yarn around the cardboard to form the pom-pom, following the usual pom-pom-making process. For a mixed-color topper, wrap two yarn colors together at the same time. Trim the finished pom-pom to tidy its shape, then use a needle and thread to secure it to the top of the hat.

Finishing and Fit Tips
Try the finished hat on and check that the band sits comfortably. If you make another one, use a different knit hat as a pattern or choose a sweater with a contrasting color or pattern for a new look. Keep the cut edges and stitching inside the hat, and make sure the pom-pom is firmly attached before wearing it.
Make Your Own Pom-Pom Hat
This sweater-upcycling project turns an unused knit into a useful cold-weather accessory with simple sewing steps. Choose a hat shape that fits, sew the outline carefully, leave the 1/4-inch seam allowance, and finish with a handmade pom-pom. A pom-pom hat is also an easy project to personalize with the sweater pattern and yarn colors you prefer.
