Planning a bedroom makeover for a home’s future owners can be challenging when you don’t yet know who will live there. For this Habitat for Humanity project, the house had two bedrooms, and the goal was to make both rooms feel welcoming while keeping their style simple and adaptable.
Planning a Flexible Bedroom Makeover
The future family could have children, be a couple, or have a different household arrangement altogether. With no way to know exactly what they would need, leaving the bedrooms unfinished didn’t feel consistent with the care put into the rest of the home.
Instead, the rooms were kept neutral in their furnishings and given adult-size beds. If a bed isn’t needed right away, the family can choose to donate it or store it in the basement for later. It’s a practical way to make the rooms usable from the start without deciding how the family should arrange or use them.
Planning tip: When furnishing a room for someone whose needs are unknown, prioritize useful basics and leave space for personal choices. Flexible furniture and uncomplicated finishes can make future updates easier.
Bedroom One: Restored Floors and a Mint Accent Wall
In the first bedroom, the old carpet was removed and the wood flooring underneath was restored. The walls were repaired and painted, giving the room a clean, refreshed look. One wall received a mint accent color, matching the kitchen door and adding personality without overwhelming the space.
Choosing a single accent wall also keeps a future color change manageable. If the family prefers a different shade, they only need to repaint one wall rather than the entire room. For a simple update like this, testing a paint sample in the room’s natural light can help show how the color may look at different times of day.

Bedroom Two: Simple Finishes and DIY Details
The second bedroom already had exposed wood floors, so the work focused on restoring the flooring, repairing the walls, and applying fresh paint. A few playful touches helped the room feel finished, including DIY cement side tables. The result was a bright, cheerful space that still leaves room for its future residents to add their own belongings and style.
When refreshing an existing room, it can be helpful to assess the floors and walls before choosing decor. Repairing and refinishing those surfaces first creates a clean foundation, while a small number of accent pieces can add character without making the room feel crowded.

A Welcoming Start for the Next Family
Both bedrooms were updated with the same simple approach: restore what could be reused, refresh the walls, and add thoughtful details while keeping future needs in mind. This bedroom makeover shows how a few practical improvements can make rooms feel ready to use without limiting how a new family might personalize them.
We hope the bedrooms bring a smile to the family when they walk into their new home. — Emma, Elsie, and the ABM team
