Kid’s Ribbon Rainbow Wall Hanging DIY

A ribbon rainbow wall hanging adds a soft, colorful accent to a nursery, playroom, or child’s bedroom. This DIY project combines a fluffy felt-ball cloud with hanging rainbow ribbons, and you can adjust the cloud shape and ribbon lengths to suit your space.

Supplies for a Ribbon Rainbow Wall Hanging

Gather the materials before you begin so you can arrange the colors and plan the finished size:

  • Large and medium white felt balls
  • White foamcore board
  • A craft knife and cutting mat
  • A hot glue gun
  • Ribbon in rainbow colors; grosgrain ribbon is a suitable choice
  • Glue-on jewelry bails, jump rings, gold chain, and basic jewelry-making tools
  • Fabric scissors

Keep the cutting mat beneath the foamcore when cutting, and use the hot glue gun carefully. Children should have adult help with sharp tools and hot glue.

Make the Felt Cloud

Arrange the felt balls on the foamcore in a cloud shape. A relatively straight lower edge makes it easier to attach the ribbons. Before committing to the shape, place the ribbons side by side and check how much width they need; use that measurement to plan the cloud’s base.

When you like the arrangement, take a photo so you can recreate it later. Trace around the felt-ball outline with a pencil, remove the balls, and cut the cloud shape from the foamcore with a craft knife. Use your photo as a guide, then hot-glue the felt balls onto the board one at a time.

Add the Hanging Chain and Ribbons

Glue two jewelry bails to the back of the foamcore. Attach a jump ring to each bail with jewelry pliers, then cut a piece of chain to connect the rings. The original project used a chain about 8 inches long; adjust the length to suit the display location while keeping the hanging secure.

Decide how far you want the ribbons to fall below the cloud. Cut three lengths of each color a few inches longer than the planned finished length. In this project, the ribbons were cut to 20 inches. Glue the top ends together in color groups so each set hangs neatly.

Arrange the colors along the lower back edge of the cloud. Check the display side before gluing: the color order needs to be reversed on the back so it appears in the intended order when the decoration is hanging.

Trim and Display Your Ribbon Rainbow

Hang the piece where you plan to display it, then trim the ribbon ends at an angle with fabric scissors. For a layered finish, make the ribbons at the back of each set longest and the front ribbons shortest. Trimming after hanging helps you judge the shape in its actual position.

Finishing Tips and Safety

The varied ribbon lengths add texture beneath the rounded felt cloud. If the decoration will be used in a child’s room, hang it securely and out of reach, especially around young children. Keep small parts such as jump rings and felt balls away from children who may put them in their mouths, and supervise any child participating in the project.

The felt cloud can also hold a light scent, but essential oils require care around children. Peppermint oil should not be used around children under 6, and eucalyptus oil should not be used around children under 10. Check product safety guidance and keep oils away from children’s skin and eyes.

A ribbon rainbow wall hanging is easy to personalize with different ribbon shades, cloud sizes, and lengths. Plan the layout before gluing, work carefully with the tools, and trim the ribbons only after checking how the finished piece looks on the wall. — Laura
