Laura’s Art Room (Before + After!)

An art room makeover can take time, especially when the right layout and decorating ideas are not clear from the start. This room remained partly unfinished for more than two years while its owner worked out how to make it feel both inspiring and useful. The finished space brings together bright colors, display areas, flexible storage, and a comfortable spot for drawing and other creative projects.

Art room makeover: brightening the space

The room had a major advantage from the beginning: a large window. However, tan walls and brown carpeting made the overall space feel darker than its natural light suggested. Replacing the carpet with a light grey option, painting the walls and trim white, and installing a Sputnik-style pendant helped create a brighter, airier look.

When refreshing a room, starting with the largest surfaces can make a noticeable difference. Lighter flooring and walls can help reflect daylight, while a statement ceiling light adds character without taking up valuable work or storage space.

Colorful artwork and low display storage

A gallery wall with colorful mats adds playful contrast to the white room. The black frames originally felt visually heavy above the shelves, so they were painted white to keep the arrangement looking light. Below the artwork, a low cabinet provides display space and makes use of an unexpected furniture find: a record cabinet built to the wrong measurements for another project.

Vintage accessories, including a telephone and cat-shaped planters, bring personality to the shelves. Flea-market finds can be an affordable way to add distinctive details; grouping a few smaller objects together also helps them feel intentional rather than cluttered.

A handmade bench sits by the window, giving the household’s two cats a place to watch outside. A window-side seat can also be a practical addition to a creative room, provided it does not block the natural light or interfere with the main work area.

Repurposed lockers for art room storage

Instead of choosing standard storage furniture, the room uses a set of lockers painted pink. Wooden pieces were cut to create shelves inside the compartments, which did not originally include shelves. The added levels make it possible to organize bins, boxes, and sewing machines separately.

This approach makes use of vertical space and keeps supplies grouped by type. Before adding shelves to lockers or cabinets, measure each compartment and check that the shelf material is supported securely. Prints and small decorative pieces on the locker include work from Alphonnsine and Gingiber, a vintage postcard, and a handmade photo magnet.

A creative workstation with personal details

A gold moon design on the wall behind the art table serves as a focal point. A projector can help transfer a design onto a wall before painting, making it easier to plan the size and placement. A vintage office chair from a flea market and an oversized architect lamp complete the drawing area.

An XO print and a question-mark marquee light add a little humor to the decor. A black-and-white rug and a large cowhide bring in contrasting patterns and textures. When combining several statement pieces, keeping some colors or shapes consistent can help the room feel coordinated.

Organizing paints and finishing the room

An old filing cabinet, painted gold, stores spray paints and acrylic paints. Filing cabinets can be useful for organizing art supplies, but check that containers are closed and stored upright to reduce the chance of spills. A Ric Rac Cactus adds greenery to a shelf and softens the collection of hard surfaces and storage pieces.

Putting the art room makeover to work

The completed room combines a brighter palette with practical places for supplies, artwork, and creative work. Its mix of repurposed furniture, flea-market accessories, and handmade details shows how a space can develop gradually rather than requiring every decision at once. With the art table ready for pencil drawings and other fine-art projects, this art room makeover turns a once-neglected room into a welcoming place to create.
