Laura’s Outdoor Space (Before + After!)

A welcoming outdoor living space does not have to feel formal or require a complete redesign. This backyard came together through a mix of comfortable seating, plants, colorful textiles, and a few practical projects. The result is a place for relaxing at home, enjoying yard games, and spending time outdoors.

Outdoor Living Space: From Bare Yard to Cozy Retreat

When the homeowners moved in almost two years ago, the backyard sitting area had very few plants and almost no flowerbeds. Aside from one small, struggling bush, the space lacked greenery and the lived-in feel they wanted. The garden beds were dug with help from Laura’s mother, and perennials were planted the previous year. A few seasonal plants added color the following summer.

Colorful Seating and Easy-Care Details

Pink outdoor chairs bring a bright, playful accent to the seating area. Beneath them, a Turkish-inspired rug made from recycled plastic adds pattern while offering a practical benefit: it can be rinsed with a hose when it gets dirty. A secondhand metal patio table completes the arrangement. It cost $15 and gets a fresh coat of white paint each year.

For a similar setup, choose outdoor furniture that suits the size of the patio and leave enough room to move around it comfortably. An easy-to-clean rug can also help define a seating area without making upkeep difficult.

Container Gardening for Herbs and Tomatoes

After growing herbs in containers near the porch the year before, the homeowners added tomato plants to the container garden. The harvest provided tomatoes for salads and pizzas. Containers can be a useful option when a yard has limited planting beds, and grouping herbs and vegetables near the home can make them easier to tend. Check each plant’s watering and sunlight needs when choosing a spot.

Use Vertical Space and Add Shade

A hanging plant arrangement grew longer through the summer and eventually needed trimming so it would not block the view from the couch. Hanging greenery can add interest above eye level, but it is helpful to check its growth regularly and keep walkways and sightlines clear.

Outdoor curtains gave the pergola a cabana-inspired look and made the lower patio feel more intimate. They held up well over the summer, with the expectation that they could be used for another season. Outdoor pillows add another layer of comfort and can introduce colors that coordinate with the rest of the space. Choose fabrics and accessories intended for outdoor use, and store them when needed to help keep them in good condition.

Finishing Touches: Rugs and Climbing Plants

A colorful painted outdoor rug adds another focal point to the patio. Laura painted this rug herself and planned to share the project in a future post. When adding a rug outdoors, consider where it will sit and how easily it can be cleaned.

Sweet August Clematis is gradually climbing the pergola. Climbing plants can soften a structure as they grow, though they may need occasional guidance and pruning to keep their growth manageable.

A few southwestern- and desert-inspired plants, including several kinds of cacti and agave, bring a Palm Springs-style touch to the garden. These plants will need to be brought indoors during winter if they are to last until the following year. Before choosing plants, consider the local climate and whether you have a suitable place to protect them from cold weather.

A Welcoming Outdoor Living Space

This outdoor living space shows how a once-sparse sitting area can become more inviting through layered planting, comfortable furniture, shade, and personal color choices. Laura’s backyard combines practical details with relaxed decorating, creating a cozy place to enjoy the garden throughout the warmer months.
