Making Holiday Vignettes

Holiday Vignettes are a simple way to bring seasonal detail to a table or another small area of your home. This easy craft uses glass domes or bell jars, miniature holiday decorations and LED fairy lights to create a compact display. The project takes less than an hour, and the decorations can be removed when the season ends.

Supplies for Holiday Vignettes

Gather your materials before you begin so you can arrange the display without interrupting the process. The original project uses:

  • Glass domes or bell jars with wood bases
  • Miniature paper houses that light up
  • Bottle-brush trees
  • Glittery snow
  • White sequins
  • LED fairy lights
  • White cardstock, scissors and glue

Choose a few decorations that fit comfortably beneath the dome. A small number of varied shapes can help the scene feel balanced without overcrowding the base. Before gluing anything down, place the pieces loosely and check that the dome can sit securely over them.

How to Make the Display

Prepare the base

Use a piece of white cardstock to cover the wood base. Trace around the base to estimate the circle, cut it out with scissors, and check the fit. A close fit helps the cardstock sit neatly inside the base. Trim the edges as needed before adding decorations.

Arrange the trees and snowflake decorations on the cardstock, then glue them in place. Add the other miniature items to complete the scene. Keep glue away from any parts of the lights that need to remain flexible, and allow it to dry according to the product instructions before placing the dome on top.

Add the fairy lights

LED fairy lights add a soft glow, while their fine wires can be arranged around the miniature decorations. Position the wire carefully so it does not obscure the scene or prevent the dome from sitting properly. Follow the light manufacturer’s instructions for use, and check that the lights are suitable for the way you plan to display them.

The display can look especially striking in low light, making it a pleasant accent for an evening meal or a quiet corner. Keep the arrangement on a stable, level surface and handle the dome carefully when moving it.

Display and Store Your Holiday Vignettes

Place the finished jars together or use a single dome as a small seasonal centerpiece. The original arrangement was displayed in the center of a breakfast table, where it added a festive touch to a lightly decorated room. Choose a spot where the display will not be bumped during everyday use.

When the holidays are over, remove the decorations from the cardstock and store them in a bag for next year. Keeping the seasonal pieces separate makes it easier to reuse the bell jars around the home for other seasons. If you want to change the scene later, replace the cardstock and decorations rather than permanently altering the base.

This quick craft is a practical choice when you want a seasonal accent without a long supply list or a complicated build. With glass domes, miniature decorations and LED fairy lights, Holiday Vignettes can be adapted to suit the space you have available.
