Peter Pan and The Lost Boys Costume DIY

A Peter Pan costume DIY is a practical choice for a family or group costume, and a fleece tunic and hat can be made with basic sewing supplies. The look can also be completed with clothes already in your closet, making it easy to adapt for different ages and characters.

Peter Pan Costume DIY: Fleece Tunic and Hat

Fleece is a forgiving fabric for a beginner-friendly costume because it is easy to cut and does not fray like many woven fabrics. Choose a sleeveless garment that fits the wearer to use as a pattern, and allow enough room for the tunic to wrap comfortably around the body.

For the tunic and hat, gather:

  • Green fleece (2 yards were used, with some fabric left over)
  • Large paper for making the pattern
  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Red feather

How to sew the tunic

  1. Make a pattern. Trace around a sleeveless piece of clothing onto large paper. Use it to cut the back piece from the fleece, then set that piece aside.
  2. Prepare the front. Cut the paper pattern in half and use one half as the front pattern. Along its straight edge, add an extra 5 or 6 inches before cutting the fleece. This extension allows the front edges to wrap around the body.
  3. Sew the main pieces. Sew the cutout edges together, then join the shoulder seams. Check that the tunic sits comfortably before moving on.
  4. Add sleeves. Measure around the inside of each armhole. Cut a fleece rectangle to that length and to the sleeve width you want. Sew it around the armhole, keeping the seam on the inside of the tunic.
  5. Shape the hem and sleeves. Cut small triangles along the sleeve edges and the bottom of the tunic for a jagged finish. Make the cuts modest and even so the fabric remains easy to wear.
  6. Make the hat. Measure from the forehead to the back of the head. Cut two fleece triangles with curved bottoms and stitch them together, leaving the bottom open. Turn the hat right-side out, then cut two small notches to hold the feather.

Complete the Lost Boys Costumes

A group costume does not need every piece to be handmade. Combine the tunic with items from the wardrobe, and reuse suitable costume pieces where possible. For example, a fleece animal suit can work as part of a Lost Boys outfit, while an animal hat can add a recognizable detail.

To make simple faux-fur ears, use a sewing machine and faux fur. Keep the fabric pieces aligned while sewing, and take care to keep loose fur away from the stitching line.

1. Cut two triangles of the same size from faux fur.
2. Turn the pieces with the fur sides together and stitch around the edges, leaving the bottom open. Tuck stray fur inward as you sew.
3. Turn the ears right-side out and add stuffing.
4. Hand-stitch the ears onto a hat or headband.

This Peter Pan and Lost Boys theme suits Halloween parties as well as family dress-up, and it can be scaled for a group of friends. Before wearing the costumes, check that the tunic and hat fit securely and that the wearer can move comfortably. Adult supervision is recommended when children use scissors or work near a sewing machine.

Finish Your Peter Pan Costume DIY

With green fleece, a simple wrap-style tunic, and a matching hat, a Peter Pan costume DIY can come together without complicated pattern-making. Add closet pieces or handmade animal ears to create a coordinated Lost Boys group, and adjust the fit and details to suit each wearer.
