Turn a Birdcage Stand into a Mod Floor Lamp

A birdcage stand floor lamp is a creative way to repurpose a vintage stand as a decorative light. This project pairs a birdcage or hanging plant stand with a large acrylic globe and a hanging light kit. Before you begin, check that the stand is stable and has a hook suitable for supporting the light kit.

Vintage birdcage stands can often be found at antique shops and flea markets. Prices in Northeast Ohio were reported to range from $25 to $70, with the stand used for this project costing $60. An indoor plant hanger can be an alternative if a birdcage stand is difficult to find.

Supplies for a birdcage stand floor lamp

  • A birdcage stand or hanging plant stand
  • A large acrylic globe; the example used a 14-inch globe
  • Tape to secure the cord to the stand; black electrical tape was used
  • A hanging light kit, such as one designed for a paper lantern
  • A 1 1/2-inch hole saw
  • A power drill

The opening in the globe needs to fit the end of the light kit. The example used a 1 1/2-inch hole saw, but light-kit dimensions can vary. Measure the end of your own kit before choosing a hole saw, and check the fit before assembling the lamp.

How to make the globe lamp

1. Drill the globe opening

Set the globe on a stable surface with its factory opening facing down. The small manufacturing mark at the center can help locate the drilling point. Have another person hold the globe securely while you work. Keep the drill steady; if the surface is slippery, painter’s tape can help prevent the bit from wandering.

2. Test the light-kit fit

Feed the light kit through the opening and check that it sits as intended. A snug fit may work with a tapered kit, but do not force the parts together. If the kit does not fit properly, reassess the opening before continuing.

3. Hang the light and manage the cord

Hang the light kit from the stand’s hook and adjust it so the globe is centered. Route the cord along the metal frame and secure it with tape as needed. Keep the cord clear of sharp edges and avoid pulling it tight. Use an intact light kit and follow its instructions; unplug it before adjusting the cord or globe.

Finishing and safety tips

Before using the lamp, confirm that the stand remains balanced and that the globe and light kit are securely supported. Check that the cord is not pinched or damaged and that the light kit is compatible with the globe and bulb you plan to use. A careful fit check and tidy cord routing help the finished lamp look neat and function as intended.

With a suitable stand, a correctly sized opening, and a secure hanging light kit, a birdcage stand floor lamp can bring a vintage frame together with a simple globe-light look.
