Woodland Creatures Felt Masks

Woodland creature felt masks are a simple, customizable craft for Halloween, dress-up play, or a handmade gift. This project includes patterns for a bear, fox, and owl, so you can make one mask or create a matching set. Choose traditional animal colors or mix in brighter shades to suit the wearer.

Supplies for Woodland Creature Felt Masks

Gather the materials before cutting. You will need:

  • Bear, fox, and owl mask templates
  • 1/4 yard of felt fabric per mask, plus small felt scraps in other colors
  • Scissors and straight pins
  • One 10–13-inch piece of 1/4-inch braided elastic per mask
  • Embroidery floss in coordinating colors and an embroidery needle

Craft felt sheets or felt purchased by the yard can both work. If you are making several masks, buying yardage may leave you with useful material for details and future projects.

How to Make the Felt Masks

1. Cut out the pattern pieces

Choose a bear, fox, owl, or all three, then cut the pattern pieces from your selected felt colors. Pin each template piece to the felt to help keep it steady while cutting. Make sure to cut the eye openings from both the front and back mask pieces.

2. Stitch the animal details

Arrange the felt layers on the front mask piece according to the chosen design and pin them in place. Use coordinating embroidery floss and a running stitch to attach each layer. Check that the pieces sit flat and do not cover the eye openings before sewing.

3. Add elastic and join the mask

Measure the elastic around the wearer’s head so it fits snugly without feeling too tight. A 10–11-inch piece is suggested for a child, while a 12–13-inch piece may suit an adult. Place the front and back felt pieces together with their face sides facing up and align the edges.

Insert 1/2 inch of each elastic end between the felt layers at the marked positions on the template, then pin everything in place. Stitch around the mask’s outer edge with a running stitch. Finish by sewing around the eye openings to secure the layers.

Color and Finishing Options

Use familiar animal colors, such as brown or orange for a fox, or choose playful shades for a more imaginative look. Hand stitching gives the mask a visible embroidered finish. For a quicker assembly, sew the felt layers with a sewing machine or use fabric glue to attach the details. Follow the glue manufacturer’s directions and allow it to dry fully before wearing the mask.

When to Wear or Give the Masks

These masks can be part of a Halloween costume, a dress-up box, or a handmade gift set. They can also complement a woodland gnome costume. Before wearing, check that the elastic is secure and comfortable, and confirm that the eye openings provide a clear view. Keep needles and scissors away from young children during the craft.

Woodland creature felt masks are easy to adapt with different colors and finishing methods, making them suitable for individual costumes or a coordinated set. — Rubyellen
