Holiday balloon decorations can bring color and height to a party without requiring complicated supplies. These five ideas add a personal touch to balloon strings using honeycomb paper, garlands, mini balloons, glitter paper, or tinsel. Choose one style for a simple display or combine details to match your celebration.
Prepare the balloons and supplies
Inflate your balloons with helium if you want them to float, following the instructions provided with your tank. A jumbo helium tank was used to fill all six balloons for these ideas. Before decorating, gather the materials for your chosen design and work on a clear surface so small pieces are easy to manage.

Five holiday balloon decorations to try
1. Add a honeycomb-paper string

Use mini 1-inch or larger 5-inch honeycombs to build a colorful accent along the balloon string. Cut away the honeycomb’s original strings, then use its adhesive tabs to secure it around the balloon string. Start near the bottom and work upward, allowing each piece to sit close to the one below it. Check that the decorations are firmly attached before displaying the balloon.
2. Hang a garland from the string

Attach the top of a garland to the top of the balloon string so the strands hang down. Longer garlands can rest lightly on the floor for a dramatic look. For a more textured finish, trim fringe garlands to different lengths. Use care with staples: keep them away from the balloon itself to avoid punctures.
3. Create a mini-balloon column

Inflate mini balloons and arrange them in a vertical stack beside the main balloon string. Use glue dots to hold the small balloons together, then attach the string to the stack so it appears that the mini balloons support the larger one. Keep the arrangement light and check that the glue dots are secure.
4. Make a glitter-paper circle strand

Punch circles in several sizes from glitter paper. Attach them down the balloon string with double-sided tape, placing the back sides of the circles together where needed. Mixing circle sizes gives the strand a varied look. Test one piece first to make sure the tape holds the paper without damaging the string.
5. Wrap the string with tinsel

Cut glittery tinsel into sections and wrap them around the balloon string for a shaggy, sparkling effect. Staple the top of each section to the string at intervals of about 6 inches. Keep staples pointed away from the balloon and handle them carefully during assembly.

Mini balloons make a playful accent, while paper circles and tinsel add sparkle. Choose the option that best suits your party’s colors and the space where the balloons will be displayed.

Finish your holiday balloon display

A simple balloon arch is another way to decorate a party space. Whether you choose an arch or one of these holiday balloon decorations, match the materials to your theme and leave enough room for guests to move comfortably around the display.
