A no-braid summer braid gives you the appearance of a chunky, textured braid without traditional braiding. It is made by stacking ponytails and pulling sections of hair through one another, so the technique is a useful option if you find standard braids difficult. You will need several small hair elastics and, if helpful, a clip or pin to keep sections out of the way.
How to make a no-braid summer braid
Begin with brushed hair so the ponytails are easier to section and secure. The style works by repeating the same pull-through motion down the back of your head; keeping the ponytails centered helps create an even shape.

Step 1: Make two small ponytails near the crown, one directly below the other. Keep them stacked rather than placing them side by side.
Step 2: Divide the upper ponytail into two equal sections. Bring the lower ponytail up through the opening between those sections, then clip or hold it temporarily at the top of your head.
Step 3: Join the two sides of the divided ponytail with a small elastic. This creates the next ponytail in the sequence.
Step 4: Divide that new upper ponytail into two sections and add a little loose hair to each side. Bring the ponytail below it up through the middle, hold it out of the way, and secure the divided sections together with an elastic.
Step 5: Continue the same sequence down the back of your head until you reach the nape of your neck. Gather the remaining hair into one ponytail and secure it.
Step 6: Gently widen each secured section by easing the hair outward with your fingers. This technique, often called pancaking, makes the pull-through sections look fuller. Work gradually and keep a hand on the elastics so the style stays secure. You can stop here and wear the textured ponytail as your finished look.
Add a faux-fishtail texture to the ponytail

For extra detail, add a second pull-through pattern to the loose ponytail. Clear elastics can make the ties less noticeable, though any small hair elastics you have available can be used.
Step 7: Tie an elastic partway down the ponytail. Make an opening in the hair immediately above the elastic, then bring the ponytail up and through that opening. Pull gently to snug the section.
Step 8: Add another elastic farther down the ponytail, leaving space between the ties. Create another opening above it and pull the ponytail through. Tighten gently, then adjust the sections to show the texture.

The finished style combines a full pull-through braid effect with a looped, faux-fishtail-like ponytail. If you are new to the technique, start with loose, manageable sections and use a mirror to check the back as you work. Elastics should hold the hair without being pulled uncomfortably tight. For warm-weather wear, secure the style comfortably and remember sun protection when spending time outdoors.
Finishing the no-braid summer braid
This no-braid summer braid can be worn with just the main pull-through sections or finished with the additional ponytail texture. Once the sequence becomes familiar, the repeated steps are straightforward, and small adjustments to how widely you loosen each section can change the overall fullness. —Rebecca
