ABM Studio: The Kitchen (Complete!)

A kitchen renovation can make a familiar room feel brighter, more spacious and easier to use. This completed makeover reworked a dated kitchen with a more practical layout, open shelving, larger windows and a cheerful color scheme. While rooms can always evolve over time, the finished space shows how a few considered changes can transform everyday use.

Before the renovation, wood walls, ceilings and cabinets made the kitchen feel smaller than it was. The layout was cramped and inconvenient: the refrigerator sat between the stove and a window, while the washer and dryer also took up space in the kitchen. The home had seen little updating for around 30 years, so the project offered an opportunity to rethink both its appearance and function.

Kitchen renovation choices that changed the room

One of the main decisions was removing the upper cabinets and replacing them with open shelves. White subway tile now extends to the ceiling, creating a bright backdrop and making dishes easy to see and reach. Open shelving works best when frequently used items are organized and the shelves are not overloaded. Before choosing this option, consider how much visible storage you are comfortable maintaining.

Replacing the solid door with one that has windows brought more natural light into the room. The window above the sink was also enlarged to twice its former size. These changes help the kitchen feel more open. If you are planning a similar update, compare window quotes early and check what structural work may be required; a larger window can have a noticeable effect on the feel of a space.

The washer and dryer were moved to free up a wall for the refrigerator. Shelves were added nearby, and the wall also provides a place to store a rolling cart used for food photography. When planning appliance locations, allow enough room for doors to open fully and keep frequently used work areas accessible.

The lower cabinets were painted a bold yellow, adding warmth and personality to the otherwise light palette. Choosing a strong cabinet color can feel like a big commitment, so it is useful to test paint samples in the room and observe them in both daylight and evening light before deciding.

A sliding barn door replaced a door that previously swung into the kitchen and dining area. The new door avoids that obstruction while adding a distinctive detail. Sliding doors can be a practical option where swing clearance is limited, but make sure there is enough clear wall space for the door to slide open.

Finishing details and color notes

The listed paint colors are Ultra White for the trim, Paramount White for the walls and Golden Meadow for the yellow lower cabinets. The project also included a barn door and several DIY details, including a window ledge plant shelf, woven rag rug, vertical kitchen organization, hanging vase, magnetized mail holder and concrete countertops.

This kitchen renovation demonstrates how layout improvements, added natural light and carefully chosen finishes can work together. The result is a more functional and welcoming room, with open storage and a bold cabinet color that give the space its character.
