Sarah LoCascio and her husband transformed their 1983 Sunline camper, Sunny, into a bright and inviting home on wheels. Their vintage camper renovation brought new life to the compact interior while preserving some of its original character. The result is a personal space designed for camping trips, travel, and nights away from home.

The couple bought Sunny in October after owning several pop-up campers. Since they spend plenty of time camping and traveling, making the camper comfortable and functional was an important part of settling into their new space.

Vintage Camper Renovation: Brightening Sunny’s Interior
When the camper was purchased, its interior featured dingy brown plaid and worn carpeting. The first step was to remove the heavy curtains and carpeting, opening up the small space and creating a fresh starting point. LoCascio sewed new curtains, valences, and cushion covers to give the interior a coordinated, home-like feel.
A wood-grain linoleum floor replaced the old carpet. The couple kept much of the wood veneer on the cabinets and selected walls, while painting other surfaces bright white. White paint was also added to the upper kitchen cabinets, finished with red trim for a cheerful accent. Vintage bedding, small decorative pieces, and kitchen accessories helped complete the look.

For a camper makeover, it can be useful to plan the main finishes before choosing smaller decorative items. Light colors can help a compact interior feel more open, while retaining selected original details gives the space character. Before installing new flooring or painting, check the surfaces underneath and choose materials suitable for the camper’s interior.

A Cozy Home Away From Home
After their first trip in Sunny, the couple found the updated interior cozy and welcoming. The camper has become a familiar retreat on the road, and even their dogs enjoy curling up inside. Decorating remains an ongoing project, with new finds added as they come across pieces that suit the space.

The interior continues to evolve as travel souvenirs and personal mementos become part of the decor. The couple also hopes to work on the exterior, with plans to remove its paint and decals and reveal a clean, silver-metal finish. When planning an exterior update, it is sensible to assess the surface condition and choose an approach suited to the camper’s materials.

Designed for Camping and Travel
Sunny travels wherever the couple goes, whether they are heading out for a camping trip or staying a few nights at LoCascio’s grandmother’s house. Its compact layout includes a small bathroom and shower, a gas-powered stove in the kitchenette, and a bed topped with a comfortable quilt.

The couple makes use of the entire space and values having familiar comforts along on their trips. In a small camper, practical choices matter: keep frequently used items easy to reach, and make sure furnishings and belongings are secured for travel. Gas appliances should also be maintained and used according to their instructions.

What Makes This Vintage Camper Renovation Special
Sunny’s makeover combines useful updates with personal touches: fresh textiles, a brighter palette, a clean floor, preserved wood details, and collected decor. Sarah LoCascio’s 1983 Sunline shows how a thoughtful vintage camper renovation can create a welcoming travel space while leaving room for future projects and memories.
