Autumn owl decorations offer a sweet, nature-inspired alternative to spooky seasonal crafts. These simple owls are made with recycled paper and a handful of basic craft supplies, so you can create a small group in different sizes for a shelf or seasonal display.
Supplies for Autumn Owl Decorations
Gather the materials before you begin. The original supply list includes brown felt, though the steps below do not specify where to use it.
- Tissue paper in several neutral colors, or newspaper for the owl bodies
- Brown felt
- Hot glue gun
- Masking tape
- Brown leather
- Wooden beads
- Craft twigs
- Raffia
- Scissors

Set up your work area with room to cut the paper and arrange the small details. Use care with the hot glue gun, and let glued pieces cool before handling them.
How to Make the Paper Owl Bodies
- Shape the bodies. Crumple tissue paper or newspaper into a firm wad for each owl. Make three different sizes, ranging from 4 to 7 inches, and secure each shape with masking tape.
- Add layered feathers. Cut long strips of tissue paper or fabric, then make fringe by snipping along one edge. Starting at the bottom of an owl, attach the fringed strips with hot glue in overlapping rows. Overlap each new row slightly to cover the edge of the row below.
- Finish the head. Form a circle from paper or fabric to cover the top of the owl. Fringe the circle’s edges and glue it in place.
Create the Eyes, Feet, and Beak
- Make the eyes. Use a small paper circle as a base. Glue short, straight pieces of raffia around it in a circular pattern until the base is covered. Trim the raffia to suit the size of your owl, then glue a wooden bead in the center. Attach the finished eyes to the body.
- Shape the feet. Cut three twigs to the same length. Glue one end of each twig together in a V shape to form a foot, and repeat to make a second foot. Attach both feet to the bottom of the owl.
- Add the beak. Cut a small triangle from brown leather and glue it between the eyes.

Display Your Finished Autumn Owl Decorations
Once the glue has set, arrange the owls together or place them separately as part of an autumn display. Varying their sizes from 4 to 7 inches adds variety while keeping the set cohesive. Have fun making these cute autumn owl decorations! — Elsie
