A Bjork swan dress costume is a bold choice for Halloween, themed events, or any occasion where an unmistakable pop-culture look is welcome. The outfit pairs a full tulle skirt with a fabric swan neck and head, creating a recognizable silhouette without requiring complicated pattern pieces. Set aside enough time to cut and attach the tulle, and gather all the materials before you begin.
Bjork Swan Dress Costume: Materials

This project uses straightforward sewing and hand-assembly steps. The original illustrated tutorial can help you follow the construction sequence.
- White fabric, such as linen
- 10–15 yards of tulle
- Elastic
- Wire and wire cutters
- Stuffing
- Black and orange fabric scraps
- Tape measure and scissors
A sewing machine is useful but not essential: the main seams can also be sewn by hand. Before cutting, check that the elastic fits comfortably around your waist and that your fabric pieces are large enough for the measurements you take.
Make the Tulle Skirt
1. Create the waistband
Measure the elastic around your waist, cut it to fit, then stitch the ends together by machine or by hand to make a loop. The band should sit securely without feeling uncomfortably tight.
2. Cut and attach the tulle
Fold the tulle and cut it into strips. Each strip should measure 60 inches from end to end, or 30 inches when folded. Keep the folded edge even so the skirt has a consistent length.
With a strip folded in half, pass the folded end underneath the elastic waistband. Pull the loose ends through the folded loop and tighten gently around the band. Repeat the process until the skirt looks full. Distribute the strips around the waistband as you work to avoid leaving thin spots.
Build the Swan Neck and Head
3. Measure and sew the fabric shape
Measure from your chest, around your neck, and down to your waist. Use this measurement to cut a long strip of white fabric, rounding one end to form the swan’s head. Stitch around the rounded end and along the length of the strip, leaving an opening at the other end for stuffing.
Cut small triangles around the curved seam allowance, taking care not to cut through the stitching. This helps the rounded edge lie smoothly when turned right-side out. Turn the fabric through the open end.
4. Add support and shape the face
Cut a piece of wire to match the length of the swan neck and place it inside before adding stuffing. Handle the wire carefully; cover or bend any sharp ends so they cannot poke through the fabric. Stuff the head and neck until they hold their shape, without making them so firm that they are difficult to position.
Cut the face details from the black and orange fabric scraps. Sew the beak into shape, turn it right-side out, and add stuffing. Hand-stitch the beak and black detail onto the swan’s face, checking their placement before securing them.
Join the Costume Pieces
Sew several tiered layers of tulle along the neck to soften the transition between the swan shape and the skirt. Attach the bottom of the neck to the skirt with hand stitches or safety pins. If using pins, position them securely and check that they are not exposed against the body.

Finish the Bjork Swan Dress Costume
Pair the finished dress with a nude bodysuit and a black wig, or use a similar hairstyle if you already have one. Before wearing the costume, check that the neck is firmly attached, the wire stays enclosed, and the skirt allows you to move comfortably. A quick fitting can also reveal whether any tulle strips or embellishments need securing.

With the skirt, sculpted swan neck, and simple accessories in place, your Bjork swan dress costume is ready for a Halloween party or costume event.
