Copper Pipe Hanging Planter (Cute + Easy!)

A copper pipe hanging planter is a simple way to display small plants while adding color and a warm metallic accent to a room. This project pairs a 1/2-inch copper pipe with colorful macrame-style rope holders and small potted succulents. Choose a location that suits your plants, then measure the space before cutting the pipe so the finished planter fits neatly above furniture or along an open wall.

Supplies for a Copper Pipe Hanging Planter

  • 1/2-inch copper pipe and matching end caps
  • Curtain rod brackets sized to hold a 1/2-inch pipe
  • Colored paracord
  • Small succulents in pots
  • Copper spray paint, if you want the brackets to match
  • Wall anchors or screws suitable for your wall and brackets

Check the bracket opening before buying, since not every curtain rod bracket will fit a 1/2-inch pipe. For a tidy fit, measure the planned span and select a pipe length that works with the bracket placement.

Prepare the Pipe and Brackets

Measure the installation area and decide how long the pipe should be. The pipe used for this project is 3 feet long. A home improvement store may be able to cut the pipe to size and provide matching end caps. Alternatively, cut it with a pipe cutter made for copper pipe, following the tool’s instructions.

Fit the end caps onto the pipe. If the brackets are not already copper-colored, spray-paint them before installation and allow the finish to dry according to the product directions. Use spray paint in a well-ventilated area and protect nearby surfaces.

Mount the Planter Securely

The brackets must support the combined weight of the pipe, rope holders, pots, and plants. Whenever possible, fasten them into wall studs. If the studs do not line up with the intended position, use wall anchors that are appropriate for the wall material and the expected load. Plaster and other crumbly surfaces may need extra care; check that each bracket is firmly secured before hanging anything.

Make and Hang the Rope Planters

Create three or five rope planters for an arrangement with an odd number of hanging points, and vary their lengths for visual interest. If you are new to macrame, Elise’s easy rope planter tutorial is one option to follow. Smaller pots may need fewer rows of knots than taller planters, so adjust the pattern to fit each pot securely. Before hanging, check that the pot sits level and cannot slip through the rope holder.

When the rope holders are ready, slide the pipe through their top loops. Place the potted plants into the holders, then rest the pipe on the mounted brackets. Make sure the pipe is seated securely and that the planters are spaced as intended.

Finishing Tips

Bright cord and small succulents create a colorful display against the copper pipe. Before choosing the final location, consider the light and watering needs of the plants. Keep the planters accessible enough to water and remove them from the holders when needed. If you use pots without drainage holes, take care not to leave excess water around the roots.

This copper pipe hanging planter can be adapted with different cord colors, knot patterns, and hanging lengths. Measure carefully, secure the brackets for the wall type, and confirm that each pot is supported before completing the display.
