A DIY recipe book is a practical way to bring favorite dishes together and make them easier to find. Kara created this personalized cookbook using a secondhand recipe book, homemade category tabs, and decorative paper. The project can be adapted to different books and craft supplies, so you can make the pages as simple or as embellished as you like.

How to Make a DIY Recipe Book
Start with a recipe book that has enough room for the recipes you want to collect. Kara chose a vintage book with ring binding, which makes pages easier to turn. A secondhand or antique book can also give the finished project a distinctive look. Before decorating, check that the binding is secure and that the pages are in usable condition.

1. Make and label category tabs
Cut organizer tabs from thick paper or lightweight cardboard. Kara repurposed a record cover for her tabs. Choose categories that match the way you cook; for example, you might sort recipes by meal type or by the dishes you make most often. A white Signo pen, a label maker, or letter stickers can be used to add the labels.
Attach each tab to a small backing piece of cardboard, then staple the tabs in sequence so that they remain visible when the book is closed. Kara stapled the tabs directly to the recipe book pages. If you would rather avoid making permanent changes to a vintage book, consider using removable adhesive or attaching the tabs to separate divider sheets instead.

2. Decorate the title and recipe pages
Add embellishments to the title pages or selected recipe pages using materials that suit your style. Kara used images from a 1960s Ladies Home Journal and added hand-drawn details with a white Signo pen. Old magazines, colored paper, or simple handwritten headings can also work. If using printed materials, choose images that fit the page without covering recipe instructions.

3. Add a new book title
Give the cookbook a title that makes it easy to recognize, such as a family name or a general description of the recipes inside. Add a piece of decorative paper over existing wording if you want to change the original cover design. Kara used another page from the same magazine to keep the look consistent.

Adding Recipes to Your Cookbook

Write recipes on cards or print them on regular printer paper, then place them on the book pages. Leave enough space around the text to keep ingredient lists and directions readable. If you print recipes, use a size that fits the page and check that the print is clear before attaching it. You can also add photos of finished dishes; instant-style photographs are one option for creating a personal visual record.

A Personal Cookbook to Keep or Give
Once the recipes and dividers are in place, the book becomes a personalized collection that is simple to browse and update. Keep a little room for new recipes, and consider adding the date or source beside each one for reference. A handmade recipe book can also make a thoughtful wedding gift, especially when it includes recipes chosen for the recipient. With practical sections and a few individual details, this DIY recipe book can be both useful and meaningful.
