A DIY twist-back top is a simple way to give a plain T-shirt a breezier look. This beginner-friendly clothing project uses a few basic supplies and just a straight line of machine sewing. Choose a shirt you are comfortable altering, and take your time with the cuts and pinned fabric so the finished design sits evenly.
Supplies for a DIY Twist-Back Top
- A T-shirt you are willing to cut
- Scissors
- Extra jersey fabric
- A sewing machine

Although this project uses a sewing machine, the main stitching is a straight seam, making it approachable for beginners. If you are new to sewing jersey, practice on a small scrap first. This gives you a chance to check the stitch and get used to guiding stretchy fabric without pulling it.
How to Make the Twist-Back Top
Step 1: Cut away the back panel
Lay the T-shirt flat and cut off its back panel. Aim for an even cut, since a consistent edge makes it easier to fold and sew the new hem. Keep the shirt’s front and sides in place while cutting.

Step 2: Fold and sew the edges
Turn the cut edges toward the inside of the shirt and pin them in place. Check that the folded fabric faces inward before sewing; this helps keep the seam on the inside of the garment. Stitch along the fold, then repeat on the other side. Keep the folds consistent so both edges have a similar finish.

Step 3: Prepare the twisted strips
Take the extra jersey fabric and twist it into strips, then pin the pieces in position. The original pieces measured about 7 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Use a tape measure to space them evenly and check their placement before stitching. Jersey stretches, so handle it gently while arranging the strips.

Step 4: Secure the strips
With the shirt still inside out, carefully sew the twisted strips in place, following the previous hem line as closely as possible. A small deviation from the line is usually manageable with jersey fabric. Avoid stretching the shirt or strips as you sew, since pulling can affect how the finished opening lies.

Let the seams settle, then turn the shirt right side out and check that the twists and edges look even. The finished top is a light, open-backed option for warm summer days. Wear it with a suitable strappy layer underneath, and wash it according to the care instructions for the T-shirt and jersey fabric.
