A damaged lampshade does not always mean the whole lamp needs to be discarded. This doily lampshade project offers a way to reuse a shade’s frame and create a decorative covering from doilies and white embroidery floss. It can add a soft, handmade detail to a room, especially in a spring-inspired space. The project idea is credited to Kinsey, and the original closing note is signed Elsie.

How to Make a Doily Lampshade
Before starting, choose a lamp frame that is stable and suitable for reuse. You will need doilies, white embroidery floss, a needle, and the lamp shade frame. Measure the frame’s height and width so you can plan how the doilies will fit before attaching them.
1. Prepare the shade frame
Start with an old lampshade that has a frame you want to keep. Remove the existing fabric or fiberglass covering carefully, leaving the frame exposed. Work slowly to avoid bending or damaging the structure. If the frame is unstable or has sharp, damaged parts, repair or replace it before continuing.
2. Arrange and join the doilies
Lay the doilies out according to the measured height and width of the shade. Try different arrangements until they cover the frame in a pattern you like. Stitch adjoining doilies together using white embroidery floss. Keep the stitches secure, but avoid pulling so tightly that the fabric puckers or changes shape.
3. Attach the covering to the frame
Once the doilies form the desired covering, position them around the frame and stitch them in place. Attach the fabric evenly around the entire shade so it sits securely. Check the fit from several angles and adjust any loose sections before using the lamp.

Lighting and Safety Tips
Doilies are fabric, so heat and clearance matter. Keep the material from touching the bulb, socket, or other hot parts of the lamp. Choose a bulb and shade combination that is appropriate for the fixture; a cool-running LED bulb can help reduce heat compared with some traditional bulbs, but it does not remove the need for safe clearance. Unplug the lamp before working on the frame or adjusting the shade, and follow the lamp manufacturer’s guidance.
- Check that the shade is firmly attached and does not wobble.
- Make sure the doilies cannot sag toward the bulb during use.
- Stop using the lamp if the shade becomes unusually warm, discoloured, or damaged.
A Simple Decorative Reuse
This doily lampshade project turns an unwanted covering into a handmade accent while making use of the original frame. Careful measuring, even stitching, and a final safety check help the finished shade look neat and remain suitable for the lamp.
