Felt Flower Wreath

A felt flower wreath is a colorful way to bring seasonal decoration to your front door or indoor space. This project uses a simple wire frame, felt leaves, and handmade flowers, so you can choose a palette that suits autumn, winter, or another occasion. The number and placement of the flowers are easy to adjust to fit your design.

Felt is straightforward to cut and layer, making it a useful material for this kind of craft. Before you begin, lay out your colors and templates so the wreath can be assembled efficiently.

Supplies

  • Felt flower and leaf template
  • Felt fabric in various colors; at least 1 yard in assorted colors is more than enough
  • 40 inches of 16-gauge steel wire
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun and glue sticks

Prepare a clear work surface and keep the felt pieces grouped by color. If using a hot glue gun, work carefully and allow glued areas to cool before handling them.

How to Make a Felt Flower Wreath

Step 1: Form the wire frame

Bend the wire into a circle, then overlap its ends. Twist and bend the ends together to close the frame. Check that the join is secure and that the circle sits flat before adding the felt.

Step 2: Cover the frame with felt leaves

Cut out about 75–85 felt leaves. Put a small dab of glue at the base of one leaf, wrap that end around the wire, and press it in place. Attach the remaining leaves in the same way, overlapping their bases slightly as you work around the frame.

Cover the entire wire circle with leaves. Keep their tips pointing in a consistent direction for a tidy finish, and check for gaps as you go so the frame is not visible.

Step 3: Make the flower centers

Cut a strip of felt measuring 1 inch by 6 inches. Make small cuts along its length, taking care not to cut all the way through the strip. Add a dab of glue to one end and roll the felt tightly. Secure the other end with another small amount of glue to hold the center together.

Step 4: Add petals to the centers

Cut out the flower petals using the template. Apply a small dab of glue to the base of each petal and attach it around the rolled center. Continue adding petals until the center is covered. For this wreath, nine flowers were made, but you can use more or fewer depending on the size of the blooms and the look you want.

Step 5: Arrange and attach the flowers

Place the flowers on the leaf-covered frame before gluing them down. This lets you balance the colors and spacing and make changes while the pieces are still movable. When you are happy with the arrangement, add glue to the bottom of each flower center and attach the flowers to the wreath.

Ways to Customize Your Felt Flower Wreath

Change the felt colors to adapt the design to different seasons. White flowers with green leaves create a simple winter look, while a green-and-red palette can suit Christmas decorating. You can also vary the number of flowers or leave more of the felt leaves visible between them.

The same felt flowers can be used beyond wreaths. Smaller blooms can decorate headbands, and a felt flower can be used as an alternative to a bow on a present. If the wreath will hang outdoors, a sheltered spot can help protect the felt from weather and keep the handmade details looking their best.

With its adjustable colors and flower placement, a felt flower wreath can be made to suit your space or a particular occasion. Take time to secure the leaves and flowers firmly, and check the wire join before hanging the finished decoration.
