A giant pom-pom garland adds soft texture and a playful touch to seasonal decor. This straightforward project uses thick yarn to create fluffy pom-poms, while small and large bells bring a festive detail. Make the pieces at home, then hang the finished garland or arrange it with other ornaments in a bowl.
Supplies for a Giant Pom-Pom Garland

Gather the materials before you begin. Using two types of thick white yarn can add subtle variety to the finished decoration.
- Thin white yarn
- Thick white yarn, in one or two varieties
- A yarn needle
- A piece of cardboard
- A craft knife
- Small and large bells
- Scissors
For each pom-pom, you will also need two matching cardboard rings. Each ring should be about 6 inches across, with a hole approximately 2 inches wide in the center. Keep the rings together while wrapping the yarn so the pom-pom has a consistent shape.
How to Make the Pom-Poms
- Cut two cardboard circles, each about 6 inches wide, and remove a 2-inch circle from the center of each. These donut-shaped pieces form the template.
- Stack the cardboard rings. Wind thick yarn around them, passing it through the center and around the outer edge until the cardboard is covered.
- For a fuller pom-pom, continue wrapping the yarn around the rings a second time, returning to the starting point.
- Slide the scissors between the two cardboard layers and carefully cut through the yarn around the entire outside edge.
- Cut a length of thin yarn and pass it between the cardboard rings. Tie it tightly around the gathered yarn at the center to secure the pom-pom.
- Once the center is firmly tied, carefully cut and remove the cardboard rings. Fluff the pom-pom, then trim uneven strands with scissors for a neater shape.
Take care when cutting the cardboard and yarn. Keep your fingers clear of the blade, and make sure the center tie is secure before removing the rings; this helps prevent the strands from slipping apart.
Assemble and Display the Garland

Thread thin yarn through a yarn needle and string the pom-poms and bells onto it. Arrange the pieces in the order you prefer, using a mix of pom-pom sizes and bell sizes for visual variety. Leave enough yarn at both ends to position or hang the decoration.

The finished garland can be moved between different areas of the home or placed in a large bowl alongside other ornaments. Keep in mind that the bells may make noticeable noise when the garland is moved. For a quieter display, place it somewhere it can remain undisturbed; for a more traditional seasonal effect, let the bells jingle as the decoration is handled. This giant pom-pom garland is an easy way to add a cozy, handmade accent to holiday decor.
