This green and white bedroom makeover shows how thoughtful updates can make a main bedroom feel more restful and functional without replacing everything in it. The project refreshed a single-parent home with a bold accent wall, improved storage, layered window treatments, and details that work with the home’s character and the owner’s existing furniture.

The bedroom belongs to Kelsey Baldwin, a single mother and small-business owner. Her background in graphic design informed the room’s considered palette and arrangement. Kelsey founded Paper and Oats around the time her daughter was born, and her story is shared in her book, Strong Girl Brave Girl.
Kelsey already had a strong sense of style, and several of her belongings remained part of the finished room, including her bed frame and an earthy pink area rug. Keeping well-loved pieces can help a makeover feel personal while making the budget go further. The goal was to give the bedroom a more intentional look while addressing practical needs.
Green and White Bedroom Makeover: Before and After

The bedroom was not in disrepair before the project. However, the wall color had been chosen by a previous owner, so updating it was an opportunity to make the space feel more like Kelsey’s. The room also needed improved window coverings, additional storage, closet organization, and a way to accommodate the dog kennel without making it the visual focus.
The design aimed to feel calm and suit the age of the home. When planning a bedroom refresh, it helps to list functional priorities first—such as light control, storage, or space for a pet—then choose colors and furnishings that support those needs.

White Walls, a Green Accent Wall, and Updated Lighting

Most of the walls were painted bright white, with one accent wall in Equestrian Green. The deep green adds contrast and a polished feel, while the lighter walls help keep the room bright. Using a single accent wall is one way to introduce a strong color without making the whole room feel dark.
Two wall sconces replaced a single central bedside light, giving each side of the bed its own light source. A more modern ceiling fan updated the overhead fixture. For a similar setup, check that sconces are positioned at a comfortable reading height and that switches are easy to reach from the bed.
A larger rug was layered beneath the pink rug Kelsey already owned. A larger dresser and bedside tables with drawers added useful storage. Above the bed, a commissioned painting by Michelle Houghton brings together colors that complement the room.

On the opposite side of the room, a cabinet helps conceal the dog kennel while keeping it accessible for Cooper. This kind of furniture can make a pet’s space blend more naturally with a bedroom, provided the kennel remains comfortable and properly ventilated.

Window Treatments and Hidden Storage

The kennel cabinet includes two drawers, with one used for dog treats. The windows have both blinds and curtains: blinds offer convenient light control, while curtains add softness and another layer of privacy. Together, they allow natural light during the day and make it easier to darken the room for sleep or a nap.
When choosing window treatments for a bedroom, consider how much light you want to block and whether privacy is needed after dark. Measuring the window before buying blinds or curtains can help ensure a better fit.
Making a Small Closet Work Harder

The home has historic character, but limited closet space. The original closet gives a clear view of the storage challenge: a small footprint can make it difficult to separate hanging clothes, shoes, and everyday items.

A second hanging bar and vertical shoe storage make better use of the available height. Before adding closet organizers, measure the interior and identify what needs to be stored. Vertical solutions can free up floor space, while a second rod is most useful when there is enough room for shorter garments.
