HFHS House: Dining Room (Before + After)

This dining room makeover shows how a few practical updates can refresh a space without changing its layout. The dining room sits between the living room and kitchen, so it feels connected to both while still having a clear purpose of its own. That balance helps the home feel open and welcoming, and makes it easier to move between shared spaces.

Dining Room Makeover: What Needed Updating

Before the renovation, the room had stained, unpleasant-smelling carpet, similar to the carpet in the living room. One wall was covered in wood paneling, while other walls had marks, holes, and cracks. Some of the damage was significant enough that two walls needed extensive skim coating before they were ready for paint.

When planning a room refresh, it is useful to inspect the walls and flooring before choosing finishes. Repairing cracks and uneven areas first helps create a smoother surface, while checking beneath old carpet can reveal flooring that may be worth restoring.

Repairs, Flooring, and a Simple Accent

The carpet was removed, and the floors underneath were restored. Stains on the ceiling were bleached, damaged walls were repaired, and most of the room was painted white. A single accent wall received gray chalkboard paint, adding a small amount of character without overwhelming the space.

For a similar project, finish repairs before painting and allow treated areas to dry as directed by the product instructions. A restrained color scheme can help a dining area feel bright and make it easier to coordinate with adjoining rooms. An accent wall is one way to introduce contrast while keeping most surfaces neutral.

A Dining Table for the Space

Because the room could accommodate a table for six, the team decided to build one for the family who would live in the home. In many dining rooms, the table and chairs are among the largest furnishing decisions. Before selecting or building a table, measure the room and leave enough space around it for people to sit down and move through the area comfortably.

A Brighter, More Connected Dining Room

These updates gave the dining room a cleaner look and helped it feel consistent with the renovated living room and kitchen. The project focused on repairing what was already there, restoring the floor beneath the carpet, and adding a modest focal point rather than changing the room’s layout.

For homeowners considering a dining room makeover, the most useful first steps are to assess the condition of the walls and floors, measure the available space, and choose finishes that work with nearby rooms. Addressing repairs before decorating can make the finished space feel more cohesive and comfortable.
