A holiday door banner DIY project is a simple way to add a festive focal point to your front porch. This oversized decoration offers an alternative to a traditional wreath and can display a seasonal word or phrase. Moss-covered letters bring in a touch of greenery, while a felt base and ribbon help the finished banner stand out.
Supplies for a Holiday Door Banner DIY
Gather the materials before you start so you can measure and assemble the banner without interruptions. You will need:
- Gold ribbon
- Sheet moss
- A glue gun and glue sticks
- White felt
- Two wreath hangers
- Fabric glue
- Foam core or cardboard

Cut and Cover the Letters

Choose the word or phrase for your banner, then create its letters from foam core or cardboard. You can print a letter in a font and size you like and trace it onto the board, or draw the shapes directly. The project uses letters about 8 inches tall. Cut them out carefully with an X-Acto knife, working on a suitable cutting surface and keeping your hands clear of the blade.

Place each letter with its front facing down on the sheet moss. Use a hot glue gun to attach it, let the glue set, and trim the moss around the letter with scissors. Cutting close to the edges helps keep the letter shape clear. Take care when handling hot glue, and allow it to cool before moving the pieces.
Make the Felt Banner

Cut a rectangle from white felt measuring 17 inches wide and 6 feet long. For a classic banner shape, cut a triangle from the bottom edge; leave the edge straight if you prefer a squared finish. Use fabric glue to attach the gold ribbon down the center of the felt. Check that the ribbon is straight before pressing it into place.

Arrange the moss letters on the banner before gluing them down. This lets you check the spacing and ensure the phrase is easy to read. Once the layout looks balanced, secure each letter with the hot glue gun.
Hang and Adjust the Banner

Position two wreath hangers over the door, 15 inches apart, with their hooks facing inward. Drape the banner over the top of the door and adjust how far it hangs down. When you are happy with the placement, glue the banner to the backs of the metal hangers. Check that the banner hangs evenly before the glue fully sets.

A Festive Alternative to a Wreath
A holiday door banner DIY design can give a porch a different look from the usual seasonal wreath. Its large lettering makes the message easy to notice, and the moss adds a natural green detail. Before displaying it, make sure the hangers are secure and the banner does not interfere with opening or closing the door. — Laura
