How to do a packing tape transfer

A packing tape transfer is a simple way to turn a printed magazine image into a translucent decoration for an art journal, collage, or window display. The process uses just packing tape, water, and a page with an image you like. Because the paper is rubbed away by hand, each finished piece has its own slightly imperfect edges and texture.

Supplies:

  • Magazine pages with images or text
  • Packing tape
  • Water
  • A cup or small container for soaking

Choose an image that fits within the width of your tape, or plan to cover a larger image with several strips. For a first attempt, try a small area so you can get a feel for how the paper comes away.

Step 1: Cover the image with tape. Press a piece of packing tape firmly onto the magazine page over the image or section you want to transfer. Smooth it down to reduce air bubbles and help the tape make contact with the printed surface. For a larger design, place additional strips alongside one another, with their edges meeting or slightly overlapping.

Step 2: Trim or tear away excess paper. Remove the surrounding magazine page, leaving the taped image attached to a smaller piece of paper. The edges do not need to be perfectly straight; a hand-torn outline can add to the handmade look.

Step 3: Soak the piece. Place the taped paper in a cup of water for five minutes. Make sure the paper is wet throughout. This soaking softens the paper backing and makes it easier to remove in the next step.

Step 4: Rub away the paper. Take the piece out of the water and gently rub the paper backing with your fingers. Work gradually rather than pulling hard, and re-wet the paper if it becomes difficult to remove. Continue until the paper has lifted away and the image remains on the tape. Results can vary depending on the paper and print, so use a light touch to avoid disturbing the image.

Step 5: Let the transfer dry. Set the piece aside until it is dry. For a crisp-looking display, mount it on white paper; a pale background makes the transferred image easier to see. You can also add the finished piece to an art journal or collage once it is dry.

Packing tape transfers can also be displayed on a window, where light passing through the tape gives the image a different appearance. Test a small piece on the intended surface first, especially if you are unsure whether the tape will leave residue. With a magazine page, tape, and a short soak, this packing tape transfer project offers an easy starting point for handmade decor. — Elsie
