A lava stone necklace DIY project combines simple beadwork with a portable way to enjoy a light fragrance. Lava stone beads are porous, so they can absorb a small amount of diluted essential oil and release its scent gradually. With a few basic jewelry-making supplies, you can create a necklace in a style and length that suits you.
Supplies for a Lava Stone Necklace DIY
Gather your materials before starting. Laying everything out first makes it easier to plan the bead pattern and check that the finished necklace will be the length you want.

- Lava stone beads
- Flat leather- or suede-style cord
- Four fold-over cord ends
- Wooden beads
- Needle-nose pliers
- Bead wire
- Jump rings and a jewelry clasp
- Essential oil
- A carrier oil of your choice, such as coconut oil
How to Make the Necklace
1. Plan and string the beads

Arrange the lava and wooden beads in a pattern before stringing them. This quick planning step helps you balance the colors and estimate the length of the beaded section.

Cut a 12-inch piece of bead wire. Tie a large jump ring to the wire about 3 inches from one end, leaving a short tail.

Thread the beads onto the longer part of the wire. As you add them, guide the short tail through the beads too, so it is tucked out of sight.

When the beads are in place, tie a jump ring onto the other end of the wire and knot it securely. Leave a little slack so the beads can curve naturally into a U shape when worn rather than being pulled tightly together. Trim the excess wire to 2–3 inches, then tuck the remaining tail back through the beads.

Check that both ends of the beaded section have jump rings and that the wire tails are hidden. Gently handle the section to make sure the knots hold before attaching the cord.
2. Add the cord and clasp

Decide on the necklace’s finished length, taking the beaded section into account, and cut the flat cord to fit. A shorter style that rests near the skin can help reduce the chance of oil transferring to clothing. Use needle-nose pliers to attach a fold-over cord end to each end of the cord.

Open the jump rings with the pliers, connect the cord ends to the rings on the beaded section, and close the rings securely. If the necklace is too short to slip over your head, cut the cord in half. Add the remaining two cord ends, small jump rings, and a jewelry clasp to create an opening.
How to Add Essential Oil to Lava Stone

Mix 2–3 drops of your chosen essential oil or blend into 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Keep the mixture in a suitable dropper bottle if you want to use the same blend again. Place the necklace on a surface that will not stain, or on a paper towel, and apply one drop to a few stones. Let it absorb for about 15 minutes, then wipe away any excess before wearing.
Start with a small amount and adjust only as needed for the scent strength. Essential oils can irritate skin, even when diluted, so avoid applying the mixture directly to your skin and stop wearing the necklace if you notice irritation or sensitivity. Keep the oil away from eyes and follow the instructions for the specific oil you use.

Wear and Care Tips

Choose a scent you enjoy, and let the previous fragrance fade before adding a different one. Some citrus oils, including lemon, lime, and grapefruit, may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Because the necklace may touch your skin, avoid using photosensitive oils on it, especially before spending time outdoors. Store the necklace away from direct sunlight and wipe it clean if oil builds up.
A lava stone necklace DIY project is a customizable way to combine beads and fragrance in one accessory. Plan the bead arrangement, secure the wire and clasp carefully, and use only a small amount of diluted oil for a more controlled scent. By Laura
