Let’s Make (Leather) Hair Clips!

Leather hair clips are a simple way to turn small pieces of material into colorful accessories. Genuine leather works well for these designs, but faux leather or vinyl can also be used. Neon yellow and gold leather are two options for a bold finish; choose a color and texture that suit the barrette base you plan to decorate.

How to Make Leather Hair Clips

These three designs use basic shapes and can be adapted to different barrette bases. Before starting, gather your material, a suitable craft adhesive, scissors, and any decorative details you want to add. Check that the adhesive is appropriate for your chosen material, and follow its label for application and drying instructions.

1. Folded leather bow

Cut a leather rectangle measuring 2 inches tall by 3 inches wide. Cut a second, narrow strip for the center of the bow and set it aside. Fold the rectangle back and forth lengthwise in an accordion pattern, arranging it so two folds show on the front.

Pinch the folded piece at its center and wrap the narrow strip around it. Apply adhesive to secure the strip tightly, then attach the finished bow to the barrette base. Check that the bow is centered before the adhesive sets. Leave it undisturbed for the drying time specified on the adhesive packaging.

2. Studded leather barrette

Cut a piece of leather large enough to cover the barrette base. For a studded design, position each stud on the leather before attaching the piece. Press it gently to mark where the stud points will pass through, then make small cuts at those marks with a precision craft knife. Work on a protected surface and keep your fingers clear of the blade.

Push the stud points through the cuts and bend them flat against the back of the leather. Once the studs are secure, glue the leather to the barrette base. Confirm that the folded points do not interfere with the clip’s opening or closing.

3. Glittered dachshund barrette

Cut a dachshund body shape from leather, then cut a separate piece for its ear. Spread adhesive evenly over the ear and sprinkle glitter generously over the surface. Let it dry, then apply a clear craft glaze over the glitter to help reduce shedding. Allow the glaze to dry before handling the piece.

Attach the decorated ear to the dachshund body, then glue the completed shape onto the barrette base. Make sure all parts are firmly attached and fully dry before wearing the clip.

Finishing Tips for Leather Hair Clips

  • Test your adhesive and glaze on a small scrap first, especially when working with faux leather or vinyl.
  • Keep cut edges neat so the finished shapes sit smoothly against the barrette base.
  • Allow each glued or coated layer to dry fully before adding the next piece.

With a few cuts and simple embellishments, these leather hair clips can be customized with different colors, shapes, and finishes. Happy crafting!
