Make This Metallic Lightning Bolt Mobile

A metallic lightning bolt mobile adds a playful touch to a bedroom, craft space, or themed party. This project uses lightweight basswood shapes, metallic paint, and a dowel to create a hanging decoration that can suit many ages and styles. Before starting, prepare a clear work area and gather the materials so the cutting, painting, and assembly steps are easier to manage.

Supplies

  • Printer paper
  • Fishing line and/or lightweight string
  • Metallic paint, either spray paint or another type
  • One 4-inch-wide sheet of basswood
  • One 10-inch-long dowel; choose the diameter you prefer

Tools

  • Printer
  • Power drill with the smallest drill bit available
  • Craft blade
  • Steel ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • Pen and scissors

How to Make a Metallic Lightning Bolt Mobile

1. Print and cut the templates

Print the two lightning bolt templates on printer paper and cut around each shape with scissors. Keep the paper edges neat, since the templates will guide the outlines on the basswood. Check that the printed shapes fit on the wood before tracing them.

2. Trace the shapes onto basswood

Arrange the lightning bolt templates on the basswood sheet and trace around them with a pen. Leave enough space between the outlines to cut each piece safely and cleanly.

3. Cut out the bolts

Place the basswood on a cutting mat. Use a fresh craft blade and guide it with a steel ruler to cut along the traced lines. Work slowly, keep your hands clear of the blade’s path, and make several controlled passes if needed rather than forcing the blade through the wood.

4. Apply metallic paint

Paint the lightning bolt shapes in a well-ventilated area. If using spray paint, follow the product label and wear suitable protection over your mouth and nose. Let the paint dry fully according to its instructions before handling or drilling the pieces. The dowel can also be painted; white is one option, but the finish is flexible.

5. Find the hanging point and drill the bolts

Hold each bolt lightly between your fingers to see how it naturally balances. Mark the point where it hangs straight, then drill a tiny hole there. The hole may not be at the geometric center of the shape; placing it according to the bolt’s balance helps it hang upright.

6. Drill the dowel

Drill five small holes across the length of the dowel. Exact spacing is not essential, but distributing the holes along the dowel helps spread out the hanging shapes. Use a stable work surface and take care when operating the drill.

7. Attach the bolts and hanging string

Tie fishing line or lightweight jewelry line to each lightning bolt, then thread it through a hole in the dowel. Lay out the bolts in the intended arrangement before tying the final knots and trimming excess line. This gives you a chance to adjust the lengths and spacing so the pieces hang freely. Thread string through the two outside holes of the dowel to create the hanging loop.

Hang the finished mobile from a suitable ceiling hook or bracket, choosing hardware appropriate for the mounting surface and the mobile’s weight. A sticky-back cup hook is one option; screw hooks or brackets can also be used. Keep the mobile securely mounted and positioned away from areas where it could be pulled down. Metallic paint is optional, so choose another color or try a rainbow palette. With careful balancing and secure knots, this metallic lightning bolt mobile can be customized to fit the space. —Mandi
