Solid perfume is a simple handmade project that can be customized with different scents and poured into small, portable containers. Made with beeswax, a carrier oil, and essential oils, it can also be a thoughtful gift. Prepare your containers and choose a scent before heating the ingredients so the process is easier and safer.
Supplies for Solid Perfume
Gather the following materials before you begin:
- Beeswax
- Sweet almond oil or another carrier oil, such as jojoba, olive, or grapeseed oil
- Essential oils of your choice
- Small containers for the finished perfume, such as tins or lockets
Use clean, dry containers with enough room for the mixture. Set them on a stable, heat-resistant surface close to where you will pour.

How to Make Solid Perfume
1. Measure the beeswax and carrier oil
Decide how much perfume you want to make, then measure equal parts beeswax and carrier oil. For example, a small batch can use 2 tablespoons of beeswax and 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil. If the mixture seems too thick as it melts, add a little more carrier oil and stir it in.

2. Choose and prepare the scent
Combine your chosen essential oils in a separate bowl and adjust the blend before adding it to the wax. The original recipe suggests about 15–20 drops of essential oil per tablespoon. The amount needed can vary by oil and personal preference, so check each oil’s skin-use guidance and do not exceed its recommended dilution. If you are unsure, use less. Avoid applying the finished perfume near the eyes, and test a small amount on skin first.
Open the containers and place them within easy reach before melting the ingredients. Hot wax can begin to set quickly, so having everything ready helps you pour without carrying a hot bowl around.

3. Melt the wax and oil gently
Use a double boiler to heat the beeswax and carrier oil over low to medium heat. If you do not have one, place a heat-safe bowl or smaller pot over a pot of gently boiling water, making sure the bowl does not touch the water. Stir as the ingredients melt, and keep the mixture attended. Use care around hot water and melted wax.
When the beeswax has fully melted, remove the mixture from the heat and stir in your prepared essential-oil blend.

4. Pour and let the perfume set
Carefully pour the liquid into the prepared containers. If the wax starts to harden before you finish, warm it gently over the double boiler until it becomes pourable again. Leave the containers undisturbed for a few hours, or until the perfume has fully set. Let them cool before closing or handling them.

Customize and Store Your Finished Perfume
Try different essential-oil combinations in separate small batches, and label each container so you can keep track of the scent. Store the finished perfume in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can soften the wax. Check that the lid is secure before carrying a tin or locket in a bag.
Solid perfume is a practical way to make a personalized handmade gift with a compact format. With the ingredients measured, the scent prepared, and the containers ready in advance, the steps are straightforward. Follow essential-oil safety guidance and take care when working with hot wax.
