Mylar Pom-Pom Garland

A mylar pom-pom garland adds shimmer and soft texture to a holiday mantel, party table, or other indoor display. These lightweight decorations are made by cutting, folding, and fluffing layers of gold mylar tissue paper, then stringing the finished pom-poms together. Vary the paper sizes to create a garland with a mix of large and small shapes.

Supplies

  • Gold mylar tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Thin wire
  • Straight pins or paper clips
  • Yarn or string

How to Make a Mylar Pom-Pom Garland

1. Prepare the tissue paper

Open the tissue paper and cut the layers in half along the long fold. Use about 4–5 sheets for each pom-pom. Fold one half lengthwise again, then use a few straight pins or paper clips to hold the layers together temporarily. This helps keep the sheets aligned while you cut.

2. Cut and accordion-fold the layers

Along the edge opposite the fold, cut slits about 1 1/2 inches long, spacing them roughly 1 inch apart. Unfold the paper, then accordion-fold it at each slit mark until the full sheet is folded. Keep the folds even so the pom-pom opens into a balanced shape.

3. Secure and fluff the pom-pom

Wrap a piece of thin wire around the center of the folded sheets. Leave the wire ends long enough to form a hanging loop. Fan out one side, then gently separate each tissue layer to build volume. Repeat on the other side, pulling the layers apart carefully to avoid tearing the delicate material.

4. Assemble the garland

Use the extra wire at the center to make a loop, then thread yarn or string through the loop. Repeat with each pom-pom, arranging them along the string with the spacing you prefer. Make additional pom-poms from smaller sheets for a varied look.

Display Ideas and Care Tips

The same folding method works with different sheet sizes, so the pom-poms can be made large for a party table or smaller for a tree decoration. You can also arrange individual pieces in a decorative bowl. For a tidy display, fluff the layers evenly and check that the wire loops are secure before hanging.

Because mylar tissue paper and yarn are lightweight decorations, keep them away from open flames, candles, and hot surfaces. If displaying the garland on a mantel, place it where it cannot come into contact with a fire or heat source. Store the pom-poms gently between uses to help protect their shape.

A handmade mylar pom-pom garland is an adaptable way to add a bright, festive detail to a room. Use a single size for a uniform appearance or combine different sizes for extra dimension.
