A Pinocchio family costume brings familiar storybook characters together for Halloween. This coordinated group includes Pinocchio, the Blue Fairy, Figaro the cat, and Geppetto. The outfits combine simple handmade pieces with clothing you may already have, making the theme adaptable to different sewing skills and schedules.
How to Make a Pinocchio Family Costume

Start with Pinocchio, the central character. The shorts, collar, and vest can be made from basic materials, while careful measuring helps the outfit fit comfortably over the wearer’s clothes.

Pinocchio Shorts
To make the shorts, cut the legs from a pair of red leggings. Hem the cut edges, or leave them unfinished if you prefer; the fabric used for this project was not expected to fray significantly. Add red ribbon as suspender straps, then measure the wearer’s shoulders to position the buttons. Finish the shorts with trim along the sides. Fabric glue can hold the trim in place, and stitching along its top and bottom edges provides extra security.
Practical tip: Check the shorts’ length and the strap placement before attaching the buttons or sewing the ribbon permanently.

Pinocchio Collar and Vest
Measure around the wearer’s neck and cut a collar shape from felt. To make the blue collar details, sew two rectangles of blue fabric into tubes and attach one to each end of the felt collar. This construction keeps the neckline simpler when several costume layers sit around the neck and shoulders. Cut a straightforward vest shape from felt to complete the outfit.
Felt is a useful choice for quick costume pieces because it is easy to cut and does not require complicated shaping. Try the collar on before finishing it to make sure it rests comfortably and is not too tight.

Blue Fairy Costume
The Blue Fairy outfit can be made as a separate top and skirt. Shimmery baby-blue crushed velvet gives the costume a soft, fairy-tale look. Before cutting new fabric, choose a dress that fits well to use as a guide for the pattern.

Blue Fairy Dress Top
Trace the upper part of the chosen dress onto the fabric, adding 1/2 inch around the edges for hemming. Sew the bodice, then measure its armholes. Cut sleeves to fit those openings, pin them in place, and stitch them by machine or by hand. Turn the finished piece right side out.

Blue Fairy Skirt
Trace the lower part of the dress to create the skirt, allowing extra fabric for the desired length and adding 1/2 inch along the edges. Sew the side seams and finish the waist. The top and skirt can remain separate, with the top tucked into the skirt when worn.
Keeping the pieces separate can make the outfit easier to adjust and more comfortable to wear. Test the fit together before Halloween and check that the skirt length allows easy movement.
Figaro the Cat Costume

For Figaro’s jacket, fold the fur fabric in half and use the wearer’s outline as a guide. With the wearer lying on the fabric, trace around the body and arms, then cut out the shape. Stitch the outer edges and the inside of the arms, shoulders, and sides. Add a small white fur detail at the center front.

Once the jacket shape is assembled, cut a straight opening down the center of the back. Add ties along the opening so the jacket can be put on and taken off. Complete the cat look with ears.

Finishing Your Pinocchio Family Costume

Homemade costumes can mix pieces from the closet with a few handmade details to create a coordinated family theme. Before wearing the outfits to a Halloween gathering, check that the seams, ties, and decorations are secure and that everyone can move comfortably. A Pinocchio family costume is a playful way to bring the Blue Fairy, Figaro, Pinocchio, and Geppetto together for the occasion.
