Project Restyle: Gold-Marbled Entryway Table

A small or narrow hallway can make decorating an entryway feel challenging, but a slim console table can add useful surface space without taking up much room. This gold-marbled entryway table makeover pairs a fresh white base with a decorative top, creating a practical spot for everyday items while complementing a brass mirror.

Planning a Gold-Marbled Entryway Table Makeover

The original console table had a glass top and weathered antiqued-gold legs. Although the table was functional, its finish did not suit the look planned for the entryway. A brass mirror was intended to be the main gold accent, so repainting the table base white offered a way to keep the space feeling bright while letting the mirror stand out.

The table legs were coated with one can of semi-gloss spray paint. For a similar project, work in a well-ventilated area and follow the paint label for application and drying guidance. A consistent base color also helps the tabletop finish remain the visual focus.

Making the Decorative Tabletop

A 3/4-inch-thick board was cut slightly larger than the original tabletop. The initial plan was to paint a faux Carrara marble design on the board, but several attempts proved difficult: the brush was not suitable, the paint dried too quickly, and the marbling technique did not come together as hoped.

Rather than leave the table unfinished while continuing to practice, gold-marbled paper was chosen as an alternative. This kept the desired marbled look while providing a more manageable way to complete the top.

The paper was trimmed just a little larger than the board and attached with satin-finish decoupage medium. After it dried completely, two additional coats of finish were applied to seal the surface. Wet paper can bubble while decoupage medium is drying; the bubbles may settle as the paper dries, so allow the finish time to dry before judging the surface.

Adding a Finished Edge

White wood trim was cut and painted to frame the board. Once the paint had dried, small finishing nails were used to attach the trim around the edges, and the nail holes were painted over. The frame gives the tabletop a more complete, tailored appearance.

The new top was attached to the table base with strong epoxy glue. Before using a similar adhesive, check its instructions for suitable materials and curing time. Let the connection cure as directed before placing objects on the table.

A Practical Update for a Small Entryway

The finished table combines a clean white base with gold marbling that coordinates with the brass mirror above it. Beyond its decorative role, the narrow console provides a convenient place for keys, sunglasses, and mail, helping keep those everyday items from collecting on the kitchen counter.

This gold-marbled entryway table shows how a simple furniture update can make a compact hallway more useful. Choosing a slim console, a light base color, and a decorative top can help add character and a practical drop-off spot without requiring a large entryway.
