Super Cute (& Quick) DIY Porch Pillows

DIY porch pillows are a simple way to add color and a relaxed, personal touch to an outdoor seating area. This project uses a small foam brush to create a graphic hand-printed pattern on sturdy canvas, then turns the fabric into a stuffed pillow finished with playful tassels. The design is easy to adapt to different pillow sizes, so it works well whether you want one accent cushion or a coordinated set.

How to Make DIY Porch Pillows

Before starting, gather sturdy canvas fabric, soft fabric paint, a small foam brush, stuffing, sewing supplies, and yarn or embroidery thread for the tassels. Choose a clear, flat work surface and protect it from paint. Check the paint label for any preparation or drying instructions, and test the paint on a fabric scrap if you want to preview the finished marks.

1. Print the fabric

Dip or coat the tip of a small foam brush with soft fabric paint. Press the top of the brush straight down onto the fabric to make each mark, forming lines across the surface. Add more paint after about every 3–5 lines. Keep the spacing and direction consistent for a regular pattern, or vary them slightly for a more casual look.

The original project began with sturdy canvas squares measuring 20×20 inches. You can choose another size, but cut the front and back pieces to match so the edges line up when sewn.

2. Let the paint dry

Allow the painted fabric to dry completely before sewing. This helps prevent wet paint from transferring to the other fabric piece or your work surface. Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions if they specify additional setting steps.

3. Sew the pillow cover

Cut a matching piece of fabric for the back. Place the two pieces with their “good” sides facing each other, then stitch around three sides using a straight stitch. Keep the seam an even distance from the edge, and secure the stitching at the beginning and end.

4. Stuff and close the pillow

Turn the cover right side out and fill it with stuffing until it reaches the desired fullness. Leave enough room to close the opening neatly; extra stuffing can be added through the open side just before finishing. Hand-stitch the remaining edge closed.

Add Tassels and Finish the Pillows

Make tassels from yarn or embroidery thread and stitch one securely into each corner. Check that each tassel is firmly attached, especially if the pillow will be handled often. For porch use, keep the pillows protected from rain unless the fabric, paint, and filling are suitable for outdoor conditions.

These hand-printed cushions pair well with plain outdoor seating because the simple marks add pattern without making the space feel busy. Vary the paint color or pillow size to suit your porch, while keeping the same brush technique for a coordinated set.
